Are there any tips or suggestions?
is panama the best starting spot?

Is it even possible to travel by cargo ship. in return we do labour on the boat....or does it sound stupid and irresponsible.,....

i would seriously doubt that you could hop on board any commercial shipping boat... but, then again, i really dont know...

too bad you arent going the other way as Zeehag is looking for crew from San Diego to that side in a couple months..

It will cost you!

First off a few cargo ships take passengers, but it costs bucks as it is now adventure travel! Also you just don't go to Tahiti without a visa and you also have to post a bond of $1500 per person (you will get that back when you leave).

Sorry, but this isn't 1945 where you can jump on a tramp steamer and see the world.

Go to Panama and get on a sailboat...forget the cargo ships. Loads of boats look for crew in Panama so you'll get a crew position there. Go to La Playita and get on the VHF or ask around...you will be snapped up....Good Luck

As others have said, there are very few passenger carrying cargo ships anymore. The containerships have working crews and typically only spend a couple of days or less in a port to unload/load and just don't pick up individual much anymore. Tahiti is also a fairly small port so there just aren't that many ships going thre.

There are a fairly steady stream of sailing yachts going there in the season. Most will have crew by the time they get to the Canal but every port is musical chairs for crew in the cruising world. Most boats will require you to pay your own expenses, very very few may take you on as paying crew and or pay all the expenses. I'd plan on a fairly lengthy sojourn on he eastern shore of Panama as finding space will be catch as catch can.

container boat, what a nice word.
As been said above, forget the commercial vessels.

Try to jump aboard on a sailing ship and take the other advice of this forum serious.
