Thanks it had never occurred to me but I started making that out last night and need to know more about it.
Thanks for the interest... It's about 700 miles from det to Chicago. So we need to consider options, but the Erie canal will be down for a very long time.

Again, consider St. Lawrence to the Richelieu, then down Lake Champlain and into the Champlain Canal and back out into the Hudson River at Albany, NY.

Whoops, just looked it up and parts of the Champlain Canal are now closed due to high water. But, I don't believe there is damage along the canal so there is a good possibility the locks will open within the next few weeks. You can check here.

Re: Erie Canal => NYC => Florida via ICW => Roatan, Honduras

Mariners are advised that the entire Champlain Canal, and the Erie Canal between Locks E-19 (Frankfort) and E-2 (Waterford), are closed to all navigation.
Hurricane Irene caused record flooding in the Mohawk River and the Canal Corporation is currently assessing damage to several structures. Updates will be provided once the full extent of damage and what efforts are necessary to reopen are determined. Updates regarding the reopening status of the Erie Canal will not be available until next week at the earliest. Updates for the Champlain Canal should be available sooner.

Re: Erie Canal => NYC => Florida via ICW => Roatan, Honduras

It is likely that the Champlain Canal will be reopened once the water level drops, but not the Erie Canal this year--too much damage.

If you want to see why there are problems on the Erie Canal flip through this photo gallery for some shots of the water pouring over the locks.

Nonsense, the Miss River is very highly regulated just watch your markers. A blind kid could do it. The only problem I always had was getting to the locks at the right time to keep from wasting fuel.<p>I would love to go along. Are you interested in going down the Big MuddY?

miss river is great until just north of nola where current is kinda big, traffic is heavy and fast moving, and safe places to hide are few and slim
per folks who have sailed it.
