Re: 1987 37' Hunter Legend $9500

This is what my 12 year old son said yesterday. With all the time you spent working on it we could have bought a better (meaning more expensive) one and still saved money. Problem was I didn't have the money at the time. I would buy a few feet of fuel line a small jerry can filled with diesel and then start the engine from that rather then the tank. I can see that you will need to get rid of the diesel fuel The impeller is probably frozen in its shape and may not be usable. Ask yourself if you are willing to clean up someone else's mess. I have been cleaning up a mess from the PO for four years and am still finding problems. The price is attractive but fixed up you may have to sink another $20k or $30k into her and then she will be worth from $30k to $50k according to asking prices on Yachtworld.

Re: 1987 37' Hunter Legend $9500

I would try to find out why someone lived aboard and did not start the engine for the last 2 years. Maybe talk to slip mates. Something expensive may be really wrong with that engine or tranny. I think that is the model that had the roller furling drum below the deck level and used mild steel angle to anchor the chainplate rods in the bilge area. Hunterowners.com is a great resource for asking about the pros & cons of this model. Still could be a great deal for the right person. You might offer to buy or pay for a new filter to be installed, allowing the engine to be started. Cheap insurance, even if someone charges you a few hundred to get it running...maybe a deduct from the selling price if you buy it. At the very least, I would want to see it crank over to confirm it is not locked up.

What can you expect for $9500? Look around, The cheapest Hunter 37 lenged i can see is $30,000. For $9500, I wouldnt expect the motor to run. If it did, it would be a hugh bonus.

a few facts it's WAY up the Tennessee River any of you live near there? NOT a good place to sell a large boat! I have read buying prices can be 1/2 to 1/4 asking prices. So for 30K I can find one that the engine runs and a large portion of the interior does not need to be riped out. Huhh

Some people make it seem like money pit and others a steal!

She seemed like nice but VERY stressed person. She said she lost her job and has not paid her slip. How long until they take it?

Also, she has only advertized in her local craigslist! Do you search there? I do. she is geting more calls I bet from this thread she did not start than from her advertizing!

There are many reasons it's 9,500 I wish I knew them all. I also can not get her on the phone and she has not returned my call from last night. If it's sold I would like to know I did spend 7hrs driving to see it. If not I may buy it.

Re: 1987 37' Hunter Legend $9500

Yesterday she had informed that the motor was dewinterized and it fires right up and purrs. The genny needed another filter but cranks. Roller furler removed. Hank on jib only. Had someone come in from out of state last night. Even if motor didn't run still a fair price but that being said if she's not returning calls now its probably sold.

Re: 1987 37' Hunter Legend $9500

just a thought - if you are willing to take a punt............

..........have a word at the dock - in person better, but over the phone just explain you have been down and are looking to buy and part of the deal will be you settling all her slip bills - direct (to make sure no debts on the boat).......but you need number (just make something up - a couple of 1/4's?) or at least to confirm the ballpark.

Once you have that you can call back later and say that she is too flaky to deal with, but if the boat ain't sold, and they then are looking to impound the boat to satisfy the debt / a court judgement (and you get comfortable on how all things work when it comes to obtaining title in those circumstances)......then tell the dock you would be a willing buyer from them. in cash. for $3k (or less ).....with a bit of luck she will choose to walk away broke (on the boat side anyway ). rather than end up with no boat and in debt (balance of dock bills and legal / court costs)......and simply sign the boat over to the dock / marina, for you to the buy.

Marina might want you to pay up front for a couple of 1/4's though

WhiteH20Kayaker, walk away from this one. There are already too many issues for a first-timer. If you wanted to buy her as a floating apartment, maybe... or if you were well experienced in boat repairs. But there's a lot to tend to. Soft decks, interior aspects, no clue if the rigging is right, if the sails are good... it's a Hunter, which is a coastal cruiser in the first place, and unless I'm missing something, 37' is a lot of boat for a first-time owner. I'd suggest a 26-28' with only minor issues unless there's some huge reason for you to buy more. And any time someone refuses a sea trial... Just walk away from this one.

Re: 1987 37' Hunter Legend $9500

I couldn't walk away from this one. 1981 S2 11.0C $2000. Figured if it took me a couple of years to repair or refit it would be worth it. WELLLLL. after pullin her out, no zincs, 3 bladed prop crumbling in my hands(found the original 2 bladed prop in cubby hole in cabin will use it), 100 or so blisters the size of silver dollars, rudder that a friend had to rebuild, roller furler that needs replacing, engine that needs to be put back together, stanchons and lifelines that need installing. Buutttt on the other hand, the inside of her is beautiful, dc refer, central ac/heat, everything works, sails are good, a diamond in the rough. I bought her to live aboard, but I entered the abyss knowing full well what might be lurking around the corner. I've put another $2K in her, and if nothing major occurs another $3-4K to finish. That would incude painting hull, me doing all the work. Here's the but again, she could have been a complete dog. I then would have parted her out, all working systems and the 6000# lead keel.

O, I forgot to mention this is my 5th sailboat. My second "Ike" boat. First was a Tanzer 26 bought out of Kemah, Tx. on Ebay for $1400. Minor repairs and bottom paint. Sold for $3K. My second love are sailboats.

I've plenty of time God willing, It's the green stuff thats hard to come by. I've work at a golf course for the last 6 years, and I'm not the golf pro. LOL. But I'm able to pursue my dream. I'm a single dad, with an 18 yr old that graduates this year. I hope to be living aboard by the end of summer. There are diamonds in the rough to be had, just wait and watch. I'm on my way to my rough diamond to do a little polishing. Have a good Sunday.
