Guys, I also have the Volvo Penta D1-20 engines. For a while, I could not get the engines to go past 2000RPM on port and 2200 RPM on stbd. Recently, I dived and cleaned the props which had all sorts of growth on them, including very stubborn barnacles. Since then, I can get the port engine to reach 2500 RPM, and 2600RPM on stbd. However, the Mahe manual says the 2500RPM is cruising speed, and they should be able to reach 3000RPM. What is the highest you guys can get on your DI-20s?

I cruise@2300 usually,but I have had them running @3000 for short period of time. I have a diver who comes once a month to make sure that my props stay clear,here in Florida during summer month the growth can be a real problem.

I can get the engines up to 2800, haven't tried to go higher but there is more room on the throttle. Have you checked the throttle linkage on the engine? There are 2 stops for adjustment. Also, is the fuel filter in good shape? I have to change them every 175 hours or so, if you don't the engine(s) won't go to full throttle. Also, if you have that much growth on your prop are you cleaning out the intake holes on the sail drive as well? There are 3 of them and I use a metal coat hanger to clean them out, push all the way through to the other side, if they get clogged you will see a decrease in the water from the exhaust ports or no water at all (It looks like the impeller has failed, which also could be the case).

Hi all, on our boat Miss Poes we can get up to around 2500 - 2700 but definitely not up to 3000 rpm. We have the D1-20 engines with Volvo-Penta folding props, supplied by FP. The engines have 130 hours each. Props were clean.
So I guess the size of the props chosen by FP is not ideal
Normally we run at 2000 RPM. On 2 engines this does 5.5 knots, on 1 engine 4.5 - 5.0 knots (no waves, little wind). Why use double fuel is it's less than 20 % faster? Great for fuel economy.

Thanks, guys. I too have the D1-20s with folding props. The water seems OK. I am waiting for the Volvo manual from the dealer. Regarding service, I know things may not be the same in different countries, but do you have to pay for the first engine service after you take delivery of the boat?

Seadog, here in Europe you have to pay for first service. Must be done by Volvo authorised dealer, otherwise guarantee is lost.

I had to do the first engine service on our way from Guadeloupe,does that means that my warranty is voided? I have 700 hours on our D 1-20,so far they are running pretty good,at 2500 we get between 6 and 7 Knots.Fixed props. It looks like this thread is well alive,so lets keep it going,I am sure we can share a lot of informations.Scott keep us inform about your trip to the Bahamas.We bacame grand parents of 3 little girls on october 1st,so our plans had to change but we are still enjoying our boat tremendously.

For Volvo as long as your warranty cards are send you should be OK
Boats have to be serviced on their way across also and not many volvo dealers there

I've installed a spectra T-200 on the boat and it is making 9 to 10 gallons an hour, very pleased with the output. I mounted it in the hanging locker on the port side. Pretty easy since the water tank and thru hulls are right there (I used the existing discharge thru hull for the bilge pump and had an intake Thru hull installed at the factory right by the bilge pump). I used the Whale quick disconnect fittings and 15 mm waterlines to tap into the existing semi ridgid 15 mm waterline that came with the boat (for backflushing of the watermaker after each use) and it was easy.
We were hoping to leave tomorrow for the Abacos but the weather hasn't cooperated so I think it will be next week.
JC, congrats on your new additions to the family. I'll let you know about our trip, but Lonnie is the true adventurer, Lonnie, you should post some pictures or share your web site with the others on this forum. You've certainly visited some of the more remote outer island of the Bahamas.

Hey Scott, soo happy you are on your way. Our trip has been a little more adventurous than I had hoped. I am so close to finding the hose that has the crack in it. I don't have any hose to replace it so that will have to wait until George Town. We had hoped to go to Cat Island but the wind and seas told us to head SW to the Exumas. Once in the Exumas I have found some kind of leak in the port engine room. I checked the bottom and everything looks good. We have had no ground contact. So this is my most recent hobby. We are in Little Famer's Cay tonight and will head to George Town tomorrow before the front moves through.

Lonnie,
While installing the water maker I went to connect the hose to the thru hull fitting and the fitting came loose right in my hand! Started to leak, I gave it a good turn and it was tight and no more leaks. Check your thru hull to make sure it is tight.
