Yahoo Pipes for OpenCPN

Has anyone experience with the Yahoo PIPES data manipulation system?

In this example the program collects .xml information from a Globalstar SPOT server and converts it to a format which can be displayed on a Yahoo Map.

The programing layout looks like nothing I've ever seen before and is way beyond my capabilities although it is supposed to be both intuitive as well as interactive.

As far as I understand,your imagination is the limit,and it should be equally easy to construct a model which displays the data on an OCPN map.

Take the challenge anyone?

I have experience Yahoo Pipes ( pipes.yahoo.com ). I like the live bookmarks feature on Firefox, but there's no built in way to aggregate feeds into a single bookmark. I depend on Pipes to do my aggregation , a pretty simple task.

I am not sure how to do what you suggest using Pipes, but I'll poke around. I am trying to get my bearings in OpenCPN. I have a SPOT.

Thanks for quick response to my inquiry.

As you see from the screen dump of the sample SPOT display created by the 'Hari' SPOT pipe,the 'main engine' is already there but needs to output the data to one of the OCPN data inputs.

OCPN is now becoming a very impressive yet easy to use navigation software,and the addittion of SPOT 'targets',similar to the already existing AIS 'targets' would greatly enhance the program.

Ideally,the Yahoo pipe setup should be able to poll a Globalstar SPOT database of ALL current public usercodes and display any/all targets within the geo location of the current OCPN map display. Globalstar SPOT is not the most informative/innovating provider I have been communicating with,and I am not sure whether such a database of public usercode presently exists or can be made available. See no reason why not as all the public usercodes have been submitted by the SPOT users for non-restricted public use.

Globalstar SPOT,although it has intentions to set up a USER FORUM,it has never been activated. For this reason I have invited ALL marine SPOT users to a newly created forum here within Cruisers Forum and hope it will be well attended.

Using an AIVDM decoder,the sentences in clear language appears as attached. There is a type 'A' and a type 'B' message.

Perhaps the much simpler,polled SPOT messages could be delivered to the COM port in a similar manner?

A simple way could be to automatically poll the Globalstar SPOT database at set time intervals,convert the .xml files to .gpx and store them in a fixed directory on the HD for later,manual/automatic import by the Route Manager.

NOTE.. For the present,SPOT data polling is only possible over internet.
In the future it may be possible using the Globalstar LEO satellites for this purpose.

Cool. Of course using Yahoo Pipes requires internet access. Maybe another idea is to figure out what Hari did and leverage the code client side to directly poll SPOT looking forward to someday pulling data from the LEO satellites. Thanks for the AIS info.

Hari's pipe that you posted doesn't clone nicely because Hari updated the source code after published the pipe. The images you attached to this thread are outdated. If you want to clone and see the real source, try this one by bousque titled "SPOT HRP Titoine":

You can use the glid ( 07SRtGl3fqrmR1BAxFVJQxgEDWP2BxvUu ) as a test which should show my current location at my office on the Dania Cut-off canal in Fort Lauderdale.

It looks like they are scraping data from a shared page (which is kind of a hack), so the SPOT user has to enable a public shared page. To integrate with OCPN is just matter of pinging the SPOT shared page every so often, cleaning up the SPOT data, encoding the data into AIVDM format like suggest, and hooking that up to OCPN.

My thought is the only benefit of using Pipes would be OS independence. The cost is an extra web page download. Using Pipes would help for an easy trial run, but long term it makes more sense to just ping the SPOT data source direct and do the data manipulation on the client side and forget depending on Pipes.

Am I making sense?

As I said,I'm new to Yahoo pipes,and yes,I see the Titoine's pipe is better.

More and more boaters now have hi-speed internet access while cruising along the coast,in Scandinavia they have 3G-4G coverage everywhere,so I think it is NOT a waste of time developing internet based navigation utilities. It is just a matter of time before we all have total cover.

I am looking for a way to poll multiple SPOT targets located within the area of the displayed map. i.e. close to my ship or searches in other,far away locations.
I have not been able to assertain from Globalstar SPOT as to whether there is a 'pollable' database of public SPOT pages, or if they can make available a list of public 'glids' and 'ESN' numbers we could use. Perhaps,if you have better contact with them,you could find out?

As I suggested earlier:

Got it. I agree on the 3G / 4G signal. Just thinking about implementing the feature using something like linux's wget would be faster in the end yet still require internet. I will make an inquiry to SPOT about the pollable database. Seems like a good idea.

Using the Titoine pipe does not generate my present SPOT test location as you see.
I wonder what kind of cache they use and how often they poll it?
See attached our own SPOT locator with immediate response.

The Titoine pipe just delivered,all of 30 min after the SPOT position was sent.

Another problem seem to be that Globalstar SPOT does NOT report Tracking positions regularly and the time shown in the left box is completely wrong,indicating the first report 1 hour ago when it was in fact at 18:08 LST
