What version of windows is best

I have a 12v carputer I wanna install OpenCPN and was just wondering what version of windows is best? Or is it even better to run Linux?

Re: What version of windows is best

IMO the best windows version is a dualboot with Ubuntu, ignoring the windows completely and only using Ubuntu

That's just installing Ubuntu (Linux) alongside windows on your computer. That way you get to choose at start up which OS you want to use. I for one haven't used windows for ages so I don't even take the trouble of leaving windows on there anymore.

Same here except we're running Fedora. I doubt it makes much difference to Opencpn which version of Linux you use.

Re: What version of windows is best

I doubt any Linux is the best Windows version??

I use XP and Win10. W10 has successfully replaced my three W7. Skip Win8.
No big problem installing W10, it was far more complicated when W7 once showed up, most things just work. And any default MS connections can be switched of if you like.

For some applications I also have dual boot on two PC. Nothing wrong in using either of, it's more a question of habit and your own feelings of what's easy.

OpenCPN works great on both Windows and Linux.

I'll stay with Win7 until MS kills it

We'd need to know the specs of this "carputer". processor, RAM, harddrive, and a list of the software or things you want to do on it.

Linux Mint or XP for a low powered computer system. Both of these run fine on older / underpowered hardware. XP because it's old and Mint because that's it's niche and it's also based on the popular distribution Ubuntu which means that there's plenty of online help available.

I use Mint on an old ToughBook running OpenCPN and a host of other apps and it runs just fine and dandy.

Re: What version of windows is best

Really need the hardware specs on the "carputer" before recommending an OS. It may not have enough juice to run anything higher than Win2K. Just sayin.
