The weather_routing plugin has many polar files that can be used.
What OS are you using?

I'm using Mac OSx. The directory doesn't have any .xml or polar files.

Re: Weather Routing Plug In - Does it Actually Work

In windows the polar files are found under
C:\ProgramData\opencpn\plugins\weather_routing\Pol ars

Also for Opencpn4.4 I found
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenCPN 4.4.0\plugins\weather_routing_pi\data\polars
and there were lots of them.

However Sean was changing things and I don't know if the installation has changed.

I have absolutely no idea how Mac OS works. Where is your User data kept?
Do some searches. on 60ft_mono.pol or Alberg35.pol

On OSX the polars for weatherrouting are here:

Applications/OpenCPN/Contents/SharedSupport/plugins/weather_routing_pi/data/polars

Which is absolutely the wrong place for such files done by developers not knowing the Apple Mac OS.
Same as any other OS such things should never stored in Application folder but in the user Preferences folder. The correct place in macOS is:
~/Library/Preferences/opencpn/plugins/Plugin-Name/

Bingo! The polars were found where Peter said, but the problem was that the Application was looking for them where Gerhard said ;-)

Now, the problem is that the polar files are not recognized. I tried with a lot of them without any luck :-(

Not sure why the polars failed to load... Can you open them with a text editor? Did any polar work?

as for the polar location... so the open polar went to ~/Library/Preferences/opencpn/plugins/Plugin-Name/ by default?

It's difficult to deal with mac specific problems as I don't own one, but we can try.

Yes, the files are ok, I was able to open them in a text editor and they are just fine. It seems that something is happening within the plugin, that it doesn't recognize them as valid polar files.

Yes, that is the correct place in a Mac OS for such files.
The problem is the lack of some guidance for plugin developers. So each developer is coding the best way he knows. The resulting plugins all have a different look-and-feel therefore. Very chaotic and unprofessional...

Re: Weather Routing Plug In - Does it Actually Work

I've installed OpenCPN and weather Routing Plugin in a Windows PC (at work) and I have the same problem with the polar. I think that the plugin is expecting an XML file and the polar files are .txt and .pol

Can anybody please send me the polar file that he/she is using? It would be very useful to have them as an example.

Many many thxs! -

Duck.

Re: Weather Routing Plug In - Does it Actually Work

There are a few files:

WeatherRoutingConfiguration.xml

This defines the configurations and routes etc... it may refer to various boat.xml files for each configuration.

Boat.xml

This defines an individual boat, it points to at least one polar file, but there may be
several polars, one for each sail plan.

You are trying to open the polar file as a boat. Instead you should edit the boat and add the polar. What version of the plugin do you have?

Gerhard,

Do you know a way how we can store the files in the users Library directory with the Packages program?. I can't find a way how to do that.
Or is there another program that can build a PKG where the files can be put in the users directory?

Thanks,
Peter

Bingo! it worked! wow, I can't believe it. It is really difficult! It would be very usefull to have a Manual or some help in order to get it going! (If you use the help menu, it redirects to a URL that does not exist)

I will try now to use the polars for my own boat (I disagree that you may have different polars for the same boat, the polars from the ORC certificate are the maximum speed for each wind/angle combination, assuming that you made the necessary changes in your sails)

Regards.

Duck.-

Years ago I have pointed the developers to:
WhiteBox - Packages
and most of them used it for their plugins however as a script version.
I use the gui version creating a project with 2 packages, one for the application and one for the files in the user library. Both compile to one installer file with the Packages software. No problem to install this way a complete Mac version of OpenCPN with all resonable settings, plugins and so on. So even a newcomer to Mac OSX is able to install it.

Because I'm not a scripting kiddy but a gui guy I also dont't use cmake and such things but Xcode. A Mac is better using a gui, a mouse or even speech (Siri is helping you) nowadays.
