question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

I am running I think 2.4 version.

All the channel markers piling show a question mark for the number. If you do an object query, you can find the number.

Is this fixed or not observed by you?
thanks

adding this, Just looking at my home pc, perhaps the number is next to the marker. Any way the question mark was confusing as I thought I had to do an object query to get the channel marker number. It would be less confusing to just put the channel marker number in the question mark square box instead os a question mark. Two of us went out using the software and we both got confused by this.

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

sdowney...
It would be a little bit easier if you actually told us the location of your observations. The contents of the object query window are actually very good way to do that. Generally the CM93 authors often put a lot of information to the INFORM attribute instead of where it should be and there's no way to decode that as INFORM can (and does) contain pretty much anything.

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

sure ok, here is a screenshot of my home pc running 2.5 with the coordinates and a cmap93 chart

I will have to recheck now on the boat which is running 2.4 if the channel markers are there or no.

Is there some opencpn setting to turn the display of these channel marker numbers on and off?

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

Exactly the case - CM93 has the top mark shape noted as text in the INFORM attribute instead of having the TOPSHP attribute set - there's nothing we can do about it and have to treat it as an unknown shape - that's why the question mark's there.
The beacon numbers should be displayed correctly as they are in the OBJNAME attribute of the beacons (if you have "Show ENC Texts" in the toolbar turned on and the vector Chart features in the Toolbox set correctly).
By the way, is there any reason to use CM93 at all in this area when there are both official raster and vector charts available from NOAA, which are more accurate, up to date and free?

no reason not to try NOAA ENC. Just that I have cmap93 on there.

If I went to trying NOAA, can both coexist and how do you switch between the two?

I recall downloading entire NOAA ENC 2 years ago.
Is there an easy way to upgrade NOAA charts or have to download all again?

Switching between charts: Status Bar | Official OpenCPN Homepage
Download from Nautical Charts & Pubs The VA ENCs are 30 MB, I would probably redownload all of them...

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

oh boy, now I remember why the NOAA charts were a pain.
I have really all of the charts from the whole country in a folder called ENC_ROOT.
I just added these to opencpn.
Now I have some green icons at the bottom which are some ENC charts, I dont know what they are but there are 10 green rectangles.
If I click on one, it does some kind of loading takes about a minute.
If I zoom it also does some kind of loading conversion takes another minute.
move anywhere, has to do the S57 enc file create conversion??

Very slow. Do you really have to go thru that once for every chart for different zoom levels? The cmap seems effortlessly easy by comparison.

So somehow I am stuck in florida, I try to move up and it takes several minutes to scroll the map perhaps 50 miles. This is not working. So I click my boat icon and managed to get home. How would you ever easily scroll around if you have to wait on the s57 enc conversion thing? It would be a monstrous pain.

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

You have to go through the ingesting once for every chart when it's used for the first time. Even on my Atom netbook it's actually not that bad, but I know it's very unpopular amongst you guys... If this operation is that much of a concern, use RNC charts, they are the fastest of them all to use.

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

Does the chart source need to exist after opencpn does this s57 to senc conversion? I was wondering if everytime it does this, does it create some kind of duplicate map in a local directory? Or is this a config type of file used by opencpn to read the ENC map?

Is there a way, a command to just force it to read Ingest all this once so I dont need to wait? Like run it and generate these files. then they are all ready to go.

I see someone else is thinking like me, a batch command to let it run and do these. Likely not too easy to do that is it.

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

Don't delete the ENC charts. If you do, you will not have the source of the data for the chart database and thus things will break the latest the next time you visit the Charts tab in the toolbox.
If you are adventurous, have a look at Troubleshooting | Official OpenCPN Homepage to know what's going to happen and start opencpn with -unit_test_1 command line parameter. It will take a hell lot of time if you have all the US ENC charts...

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

hey thanks, started running it now.
wonder how long it could take as I have all the NOAA ENC

I appears to be showing some raster charts, which is interesting as I dont recall putting them in the chart database. But I do have some.

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

If ingesting one chart takes approximately 1 minute on your machine and there's say 900 charts (something like that is the contents of my US set), you get the picture - many hours. And be prepared for a crash that may happen when a broken chart is encountered. This function was really not meant for general use

Re: question marks on all channel markers for cmap 93 chart

In such cases I just have a look at the end of the logfile and run it again. If it crashes on the same chart, I confirm it by reproducing manually and report a bug in flyspray, if not able to fix it myself...

I am running Ubuntu. Looked in .opencpn and var/log did not see anything.
Where is the log?
