OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

Ahoy OpenCPN family....

The Beta test series for OpenCPN Version 5 starts today.

Downloads:

Here are the Windows and Mac installer download links:

Windows:
http://opencpn.navnux.org/beta/openc...5280_setup.exe

Mac:
http://opencpn.navnux.org/beta/beta/...08+0395280.dmg

Linux users will find installation packages at the OpenCPN Beta repository:
https://launchpad.net/~bdbcat/+archive/ubuntu/opencpn

OpenCPN Version 5 (O5) represents a major upgrade in UI functionality, as well as numerous changes "under the hood" for enhanced performance and reliability.
We will leave the detailed Feature discussion for another thread. Feel free to explore and discover...

Plugins:
OpenCPN Version 5 is built using the latest available version of wxWidgets, wx3.1.2. Migrating to this version of wxWidgets comes with an ABI compatibility update. As a result, all Plugins for OpenCPN must be rebuilt with compatible libraries in order to install and run on OpenCPN Version 5.

Rebuilding and testing all Plugins across all platforms and architectures is a big effort. It will take some time. We have chosen to start the O5 Beta program before all of the rebuilt Plugins are available, in order to advance the core application release schedule.

We have created a web page tool called the O5 Plugin Tracking Tool. This tool will help Beta testers track the status of all O5 compatible Plugins.

https://opencpn.org/OpenCPN/atp/48fb3bOH/5plugs.html

On this page you will find a color-coded grid of Plugin choices for Beta testing. As more Plugins are migrated to O5 architecture, their links and color codes will be updated appropriately.

As you can imagine, tracking and monitoring Beta testing for all these Plugins on all supported O5 platforms is a complex project. In order to mitigate any possible confusion over different Plugin sources and versions, the policy is this:
The links on the O5 Plugin Tracking Tool are the ONLY official source for O5 Beta test Plugins.

Bug Reports:
We encourage Beta Test bug reports using the OpenCPN Flyspray Bug Tracker facility.
https://opencpn.org/flyspray/index.p...index&switch=1

Report bugs in the "OpenCPN Version 5 Beta" task, please.

Bugs reported on Flyspray are trackable and archived indefinitely. These reports receive the most immediate and relevant attention, leading to swift correction of bugs for the next Beta release.

Of course, you may also post reports in this thread. They will be noticed, but the correction and publication of fixes may be delayed.

We thank you in advance for all your help in testing this new Release.

Good Luck
Dave, and the whole OpenCPN Team.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

The link to the tactics plugin for 5.0 leads to a 404 error, it's currently pointing to http://opencpn.navnux.org/O5Plugins/...ov50-win32.exe which doesn't seem to exist.

OP5 installed fine on Win 10, playing around with it now. Thanks for all the hard work.

Hi,

Thanks OpenCPN team for their effort and dedication

First impression :
- the display is quicker that in the previous version
- UI is different but it is ok after several minutes of practise

Still doing more test

MBTiles work form me. For many months. There was little (actually no) feedback about it during those months so there also were no changes to it.

pinguino, l-o-life...

OCPN 5 is about 3-4 months from release.
There is lots coming, multi-canvas and MBTiles are a only a part of the new features you will see.

I am not taking bug reports from O499, yet. Be a while before a real Beta starts.

Feel free to play around in the sandbox, though. I think your idea of custom mbtiles built from your own chartsets has some merit, especially for resource limited machines.

Thanks
Dave
check flyspray and you see mbtiles bugs/wishes trickling in.

Re: OpenCPN Version 5 Beta Starts

the menu bar is different and in black, why was it change? Personnally I preferred the colour one, but I can get accustom to it.
Thanks for the new version, I appreciate.

Hi Pavel

This rather large small-scale mbtiles chart of W Europe fails to load
DL.FREE.FR

"10:49:39: Loading chart data for C:\Users\françois\Desktop\MBTILES-F\atlant est.mbtiles
10:49:39: ...initialization failed for C:\Users\françois\Desktop\MBTILES-F\atlant est.mbtiles
10:49:39: CreateChartTableEntry() failed for file: C:\Users\françois\Desktop\MBTILES-F\atlant est.mbtiles"

I couldn't find how to switch back to the old toolbar. So I read the docs coming with OCP 5.0. There it was described as before but no way how to get it.
Pretty nice is the new split screen especially for users with a small screen like the raspi people. So they can't see nothing anymore when split screen is activated.
However the old bugs claimed in several thousand flypray entries are still there and not fixed. So it is not too difficult to work with this version.

BTW, displays fine with QtVlm...

I do like the new (MUI = modern UI?) look. Just one little thing, the track icon should not have connection points, it looks too much like a route. And obviously the plugin icons needs to be reworked...

Gerhard...

You forgot to mention they also see nothing anymore if they turn the screen off.

It also displays fine for me in OpenCPN so would suspect the special characters in your path. Will have a look at it.
