I'm another Mac user who would love to be able to use CM93 charts. When I saw what was happening with OpenCPN I was excited.

Then I noticed that the Mac version is lacking an active maintainer, and the 1.3.x appear less compelling than the newer (2.3.1) versions.

I'm good with computers and have done quite a variety of coding over the years, but don't have any Mac OS X development experience, and haven't compiled anything big in years. I would like to help, but don't really have the experience (or possibly the time either) to do the whole job.

Is there anything I can do to help? I can certainly test things and write good bug reports. I could probably get XCode and start trying to figure it out a bit.

All help would be appreciated! The starting point is install the Mac developer tools. In addition, you will need to build and install Cmake, Glib2 plus its dependencies. The OpenCPN source code can be downloaded from opencpn.org and either built from the command line (after typing "cmake ../" from the build directory) or using Xcode (type "cmake -G Xcode ../").

The next step is working out what version wxMac will be compatible - that's what myself & markymark are up to at the moment.

I've been compiling OpenCPN 2.1.624 on Mac OS X 10.5.8. OpenCPN starts with several memory faults (crashes) during initialization. Some in the WxWidgets code. I've the necessary experience with debugging but haven't had time to learn the Mac dev tools to chase the bugs down, or contact the more experienced developers for ideas on the required debugging....

I might get back to working on in in a few weeks, but I'm distracted by tropical charms just now...

Mac wiki

To help a bit I created a page for Mac compiling on the wiki Compiling Mac OS X | Official OpenCPN Homepage.
My idea was that i cold help to have a page where the present situation was presented, and all the problems to be solved, were stated.
Use it if you think this is a good idea....it is after all a wiki.

Thanks, Thomas. This is a good idea. We have also started a Mac developer thread in the SourceForge forum: https://sourceforge.net/projects/ope...3/index/page/1

As we zero in on a workable build set-up we can publish those results in the wiki page.

There is already created a forum for Mac OS X developers at:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ope.../topic/4091133

by malcolmh. Any OpenCPN/Mac OS X developer is invited to join.

Gerhard

Huh, doubled posted already.

For hopeful Mac users, you might want to try this in the meantime:

Thanks for your effort guys.

I'm looking forward to the Mac version catching up to the features of the PC version.

Best of luck.

I'd like to give it a try Erwin, however I get a 404-error (file nog found).

We have not heard from Erwin for some time. Take a look at: Compiling Mac OS X | Official OpenCPN Homepage

Malcom,

it is not correct that it is possible to compile a running Mac OS X version as you have pointed here. You should know this yourself.
