OpenCPN on a Linux System

Hi, I just joined the forum. I installed OpenCPN Ver 5 on my Linux desktop. I'm using Ubuntu Ver 18 Bionic Beaver. It seemed to install ok. Downloaded a couple of NOAA charts using Chart downloader. A couple were RNC and one was ENC. Seemed to down load them. Used the default directory that is showed. When I click on Show local files nothing happens. It's also not displaying the charts when I open the program. I even clicked on rebuild the chart data base and the ENC button. No joy. When I go straight to the directory in file manager where the charts are they are showing there but not in OpenCPN. I'm using the same version on a Windows 10 laptop with with the same charts with no problems. It's making me nuts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Re: OpenCPN on a Linux System

Jim,

Do you have chart outlines turned on?

Is the location of the screen center actually near one of the chart locations? Does the coastal outline show?

Show files tries to open the default file manager. Does it actually open the file manager? If not that may not be a problem with OpenCPN.

Can we see a log file?

Re: OpenCPN on a Linux System

Yes. Chart outlines are turned on. I think that the center of the screen is centered over the ocean and not close to a coast line. I can't seem to get the screen to move left or right. I'm scaled out to 500NM and when I scale down to 1 NM all I get is blue so I must be a long way from a coast line. Isn't OpenCPN suppose to show a world map when it first loads or do I have to load more charts? Jim

Could it be a permissions problem? Check file permission on the charts. You should have

Start OpenCPN and click the ? (Help) icon. On the first dialog is a long to the log file. Click that link and see if the log file opens in a text view.

If it does, copy the last 100 lines of the log file and post them here in a message. Probably there is a message or two in there that tells what is the problem.

Please uninstall your snap package and install OpenCPN from the official repository. https://launchpad.net/~opencpn/+archive/ubuntu/opencpn

More installation instructions for Ubuntu here https://opencpn.org/wiki/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=opencpnpencpn_user_manual:getting_st artedpencpn_installation:ubuntu_ppa

The snap package for OpenCPN is very old, not even version 5.0, and incomplete. It is not officially supported.

Re: OpenCPN on a Linux System

Thanks, That got it working. It still installed in a directory called Snap but it is Ver 5. I though that I was downloading the most current version the first time since it came from a site that a link from a search took me to. Jim
