OpenCPN in a fixed location

I'd like to use OpenCPN ashore, watching AIS data from the local port.

Do I need to have a GPS connected to OpenCPN? I'll have a GPS connected to the Standard Horizon GX2150B, but would like to avoid having to run a second GPS just for the PC.

Can I just give OpenCPN a fixed location? If so, I'm not seeing that option somehow.

Just go a chart with your location.

Re: OpenCPN in a fixed location

Why didn't I think of that.

That's what I get for asking the question before I just tried it.

I just figured that it wouldn't work unless OpenCPN itself was also getting a GPS fix.

That will make things a bit easier.

Thanks.

Re: OpenCPN in a fixed location

That is what makes OpenCPN a great planning tool. I have a copy on my desktop - no GPS.

You can also use a web based AIS system at home or on our smartphone withiout an AIS receiver. It is not a real AIS system
