How to use a Samsung SIII Mini as GPS for Laptop

Maybe some body explained this before, but I could not find it. So mods if so feel free to remove this thread.

How to use my Samsung SIII Mini (GT-I8190L) as GPS over an USB cable.

First download from play.google.com/store ShareGPS



Now download for the Laptop adb.exe at (link adb download)





Run it on the Laptop in a command prompt box as "adb forward tcp:50000 tcp:50000" (without the quotation marks)



Now setup OpenCPN to receive the NMEA strings. Goto settings -> connections. Select as Properties "Network" "TCP" Adress "127.0.0.1" and Dataport "50000" and click "Apply"



Now Run on the Phone ShareGPS and go to "settings" deactivate "Use Bluetooth" - Activate "Use USB" Choose your Format and activate "Create NMEA"



Now the GPS will RUN, not forget to activate the GPS function on the phone.



And OpenCPN work with GPS ( my boat seems to be in my garden)

Because my (Super Sh*t) Brazilian Laptop does not has Bluetooth, for other sailors with this problem take your good old USB Cable and go.

PS. with some more software its also possible to transmit the NMEA GPS messages over Wifi to OpenCPN. Only then you drain your phones battery realy fast. But interrested just ask me.

But when I try to do the fix as described I open a blank adb page with nothing to append, of course it may be that I dont understand the steps described.

If you connect your phone to USB and open a console and run the command "lsusb", does your phone show up in the list of connected devices? If no you might want to try to unplug your phone and enable developer settings on the phone and then reconnect it and run the lsusb command again.

Assuming that the manufacturers ID of your device is 0x2717, you next step is to add this ID to the adb_usb.ini file. Open a terminal, and type "gedit ~/.android/adb_usb.ini" (if your system uses a different editor, replace gedit with the name of it). Now you will either get to edit an existing file, or you will (be prompted to) create a new one. The file is nothing but a list of ID's (see here) and you must append a line containing the ID (0x2717) and save the file. Now you must restart adb, with the commands "adb kill-server" and then "adb start-server". Now it should be possible to detect your handset using "adb devices".

Yep, tried all that and as I said, I could see my phone marked in red (above) but could not figure out what the id of the device was to edit

When I do the last steps I get no list of devices attached

Is the id in green?
