Re: HOW TO UPDATE OPENCPN CHART CM 93v2

There are several “newer versions” around that are not. File dates are NOT a reliable indicator. It seems that at least one “newer version” was simply a file copy that created new file dates. ALL These copies are pirated.

Re: HOW TO UPDATE OPENCPN CHART CM 93v2

1 - AFAIK, the latest release of CM93 v2 was July 2012 (e.g. #1). None of the branded 2013 releases I've tried were younger.

2 - If you're satisfied with the Navionics coverage (test it at https://webapp.navionics.com/?lang=en
(and you insist on using O), you can use SASPlanet (+ SASplus maps folder) to download Navionics mbtiles, even for of a large area, that SASplanet can later transform into kap tiles that O can read (e.g. about 12 hours for downloading the Irish coasts at z17 and z14 levels and converting to kap) (#2,3,4). Drawback is that you have to repeat the procedure every sailing season.
The same procedure will obviously get you Google, Bing, Nokia...(you name it) sat coverage, very useful in backwater areas...

3 - If you're not satisfied with the Navionics coverage, but desperately want up to date worldwide charts on your computer, you will have to look beyond O. I am satisfied with TelChart V3 3.5.32 (clunky interface !) and CM93 V3 (latest release 'available' today is #840 = 2017 week 40 =
October 2 - 8, 2017, a 3 Go download as compared with 1,4 Go for V2) (#5, 6, 7, 8). Tested on W7 and W 8.1 (hint: run all required .exe as admin)

cm93v2 is the same as navionics in 95% of the world. The depth soundings are identical.

Navionics charts are obviously more up to date and they also show underlined soundings (above the hydrographic zero level).

Re: HOW TO UPDATE OPENCPN CHART CM 93v2

You do realize the "sonar" charts have been proven inaccurate and have caused boats to run aground?

I said 95% of the world. There are a few areas where these may be more detailed, but there are also other chart sources. There are also areas that cm93v2 covers better.

Re: HOW TO UPDATE OPENCPN CHART CM 93v2

Since this discussion has gone 'off topic' to the errors in Navionics charts I have to weigh in with some observations in remote areas where Navionics can be dangerously inaccurate. In areas used by merchant vessels their charting is fine.
Here's my track (in red) entering a harbor on Cebu Island, Philippines, as shown on Navionics and satellite imagery.

Terry, It looks like Navionics has old information too. Thank you. I guess it's good to use kaps too.

Re: HOW TO UPDATE OPENCPN CHART CM 93v2

Hello All,

at first, please excuse for my english. I am from Germany, Berlin and I will try my very best, you will understand me in an easy way!

The last days I tried to convert the Cache files from SASPlanet - Navionics in a Kap file. I haven't found a way to do this. For many hours I look in Google for the right way, but can't find.

@sailorF54: I read you had did that?! Please, can you explain me the way?

I had configured SASPlanet so I had the downloaded png files in the Cache Folder for the different zoom Levels.

But I didn't know the next step!

The Motivation is to have a Chart for Opencpn.

The best way for me would be a Chart with Navionics on the water and Google Maps on Land.

Thanks all for a hint.

Best wishes from Berlin

Norman

Re: HOW TO UPDATE OPENCPN CHART CM 93v2

The only way to get the release date in OpenCPN is the file NNNNNNNN.EXD the file name is the date, eg. 20110803.EXD is Third of August 2011.

Re: HOW TO UPDATE OPENCPN CHART CM 93v2

OH PS...Don't pimp any charts, several boats in this area lost by trusting Navionics charts and not their eyeballs.

Its unfair to rave about accuracy giving others a sense of security causing them to abandon safe navigation practices.

Hi Norman,

The easiest and best way to do what you want is to use the GE2KAP program with SAS Planet to create KAP charts for OpenCPN.

Take a look at these guides I've written:

Create GE2KAP Overlay (Rev12)

GE2KAP2SASP

Also you can use the above to create maps for land since SAS Planet has both Google and Bing maps as a source.

Let us know if you need more help.
