How Can I Download Saved Tracks from Garmin GPS 72 on Ubuntu Linux?

On the boat I run OpenCPN on an Ubuntu Linux laptop with a BU-353 GPS connected. I like to save my track at the end of the day, but there are two problems. Sometimes the BU-353 doesn't get a lock before I am ready to depart. On a longer passage I don't want to run the laptop constantly because of the power it draws.

Underway I use a Garmin GPS 72 for navigating. It has the capability to save a track. Under Windows I can use EasyGPS to download the saved track from the GPS 72 to my computer. I'd like to be able to save tracks from the GPS 72 to the Ubuntu laptop. Does anyone know how to do that?

EasyGPS isn't available in a Linux version. I haven't found a Linux program that will download tracks from the GPS 72 and I am not conversant with how to install Linux programs, so I could use help in both areas.

I read the manual pages about building from source. It said "you'll find that working from the GPSBabel SVN tree ... is easier." So I tried "svn checkout http://gpsbabel.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/gpsbabel" as recommended. Not installed. I ran "sudo apt-get install subversion" and tried again. About a thousand file names scrolled up the screen and at the end it said "Checked out revision 4964."

According to the manual, "In most cases, the code is as simple to build as running:
./configure && make" but when I tried I got "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory". I noticed a new gpsbabel directory, so I changed to that and tried again. This time I got:

I don't know where to go from here. I read the config.log file but it didn't mean anything to me. I've attached it in case you need it. Can you help me get this program built? Thanks.

Fabbian...
Just install it in the Software Center, no need to build from source.

Re: How Can I Download Saved Tracks from Garmin GPS 72 on Ubuntu Linux?

Thanks, Pavel. That was certainly much easier. I have two questions. The version on the Ubuntu Software Center was 1.4.3 while the current release version is 1.5.2. Do I care?

Was it something I did wrong or something missing from my computer or something wrong with the downloaded files that prevented me from building from source? At some point I'd like to be able to build from source even if it's not needed for this particular program.

Fabbian...
Looking at GPSBabel 1.5.0 release notes there probably is nothing relevant for what you need to do now.
For the build, you seem to be missing dependencies - you should install at least the following packages: build-essential, autotools-dev, autoconf, libexpat1-dev, expat, help2man, libxml2-utils, libusb-dev, zlib1g-dev, libqtwebkit-dev, libqt4-dev

Re: How Can I Download Saved Tracks from Garmin GPS 72 on Ubuntu Linux?

Thanks, Pavel. I'll tinker with the missing dependencies and see what I can do but I've already installed the version from the Ubuntu Software Center and I'll try to get it working.
