Future request / Friends

Hi Friends,

In the AIS options I would like a “Friends-list”. It is a special filter where I can find my friends. How to do?
Make a list of “friendly” MMSi numbers and a special “range”. Say 5 miles. When I use the “friends-list” filter I can see which MMSi numbers are in the neighbourhood of my present position . Maybe I just go a little bit further to the next harbour because I can meet some friends there.
Or,……. also possible,…..I will go further to an other harbour because a “special person” is absolutely NOT there !

Not quite the same, but look here.
http://opencpn.org/ocpn/setting_options
Down under mmsi tab. For "follower". Also use your VHF/DSC buddy feature, also see gpsgate buddy in the advanced ais documentation.
Sign into tracker and make a feature request starting with AIS Friend.

Similar request (I think I submitted it several years ago): to store the basic static info on all targets for later reference (days or weeks later). The purpose is to immediately fill in the static info on a target rather than waiting on the static info to be transmitted.
For me, this is a useful feature when cruising in areas which are frequented by a limited number of commercial vessels (e.g., cruise ships, inter-island freighters and ferries, etc.) such as the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
This should be done for all targets received and the data purged only if the data table is nearing a size limit, or the target has not returned for an extended period of time (several weeks or a month).
While some of this could be accomplished by the manual "follower" feature, I found the automatic following feature of another PC-based chart program (now deceased) to be useful.

Re: Future request / Friends

John, I recall this request. Is it in the Tracker? Did you make a feature request? Otherwise it will be lost.

Re: Future request / Friends

AIS is a safety item, not facebook.

Then again, it is a pretty cool idea, and probably not all that difficult to accomplish from a technical standpoint. Seems like that kind of flexibility could be built in.

John,

in case you have not observed this: in the current versions of OCPN there is the option that previously observed AIS targets will show up with their name in light green which will change to the full green symbol once the complete actual static data received.
Only complete new targets do appear in yellow.
You will find a complete list of your received targets in a file called mmsitoname or mmsiname (this in the case of windows).
Even with more than thousand targets we don't observe any delays on a small ARM based system.

Re: Future request / Friends

I checked and could not find my feature request so I either never submitted it or it was incorporated into the feature described by bcn. That feature would meet my request.
