Connections user interface

The current interface for connections is annoying.

The settings dialog in opencpn is already becoming disorganized with many items appearing the in wrong page.

To further confuse the user is presented with "apply", "ok", and "cancel"

What the meaning of apply is, or maybe to assume "ok" means both "apply" and "cancel"


Eliminating the "apply" button altogether seems the obvious solution, but then the connections is more or less broken.


I propose that the "apply" button be removed, and an "update" button provided only for connections, or else the connections can be edited in a separate dialog or?

How about giving up on 'OK' since clicking the cross closes the window anyways?

Apply = apply the changes, stay in the window.
Cancel = cancel the changes, stay in the window.

Then x in the right corner closes the window (=alt/F4).

Most of the changes need the window to close to apply them.

Many settings already take place immediately despite ok and cancel.

The program cannot be used when settings dialog is visible.

Maybe it can also be modeless so the display is updated when various chart options are checked like "soundings" so the result is obvious to the user who can then uncheck it without having to click ok then open the settings again?

The nmea debug window is currently modal. I think it should be able to remain open as I check/uncheck various connections to determine which connection is sending which message.

I don't have a live connection to test with right now but as far as I know the apply button does nothing in the "connections" pane. The only way to apply and test properly is to close the settings dialogue completely.

Yes I'd love to see it "modal" (if that is right word for updates happening in real time on the chart behind).

I'm not sure I understand. If you mean like this i't already possible and not modal - or?
