Re: Climatology - Database Search

MarineTraffic now has Density Maps which are International traffic density showing Shipping routes year by year (selectable by size and type).

Additions to the Density Maps feature – MarineTraffic Help

I have written them to see if we can get some average yearly data for the routes, sizes and types of ships which could possibly be included in the plugin.

Re: Climatology - Database Search

We have had a response from Marine Traffic regarding heavy shipping density maps. They are discussing/reviewing this request with their stakeholders. They advise that they do participate in some opensource and educational programs.

I have offered that we would:
1. Further compress the datasets and send the compressed dataset back to them with the methods.
2. Provide a credit and a link to Marine Traffic in our documentation.

We will await with hope the Chief Architect's response from other stakeholders.

Please note that Marine Traffic has a Shipping Density Maps by Year

https://help.marinetraffic.com/hc/en...y-Density-Maps
http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/...tery:58/zoom:2

Are there vessel type and tonnage filters that we would like, or does it matter?
Would yearly traffic be ok? -They have this.
Or would quarterly or monthly be any better? - Ask how significant would this information be in your planning process?

I will need this information if they come back with a positive response.
We not asking for live data with specific ship position information here.

Re: Climatology - Database Search

Marinetraffic response. I am sorry they do not want to support this opensouce effort.

Dear Rick,

Apologies for not getting back to you earlier, but summer vacations meant we were out of office and unable to coordinate properly. I am afraid the company stakeholders are not interested in your proposal at this time.*

Best regards,

Re: Climatology - Database Search

Marine Traffic decided not to provide us with the average monthly traffic density data we wanted, but they've provided it on their website now. The type of traffic can be selected as well.

Perhaps we could take images of Average monthly images for Climatology?

Sean, I'll see if I can screen grab at good resolution.

Density Maps - for Climatology_pi

Marine Traffic now has Density Maps for all vessels for 2015.
I took a series of screen grabs and cropped them in hopes a talented Map savy person will splice them together and map them as Kap or something to the globe to be used in Climatology_pi as a simple Density overlay.

Opencpn Beta File Thingie rguser rgpass

Find Density-Maps
Density-2 2 different shots of entire glob zoomed out. Not as high res.
Density-3 Not entire globe, probably not useful, but zoomed in a little
Density-12 Zoomed in 12 pieces 1A-1D, 2A-2D, 3A-3D

Latest cyclones? European MyOcean have some data too (with reanalysis) may worth some update or backtesting.

It says in the plugin in the config, about tab exactly where the data can be downloaded.

That's really useful:

the climatology plugin has a lot of data not in the book as well.. In any case, which displays do you mean? We can add them to climatology.

Re: Climatology - Database Search

Here is a Climatology look alike (sort of), but it is not as useful as Climatology_pi which has more information and works with Weather_Routing_pi! and is offline.

Here's another interesting site.

Sure but you should try OpenCPN and the Climatology_pi Plugin when used with the Weather_routing_pi you can plan trips based on 30 year averages. It really is helpful, but keep in mind that your weather may not be "average" some or part of the time.

Re: Climatology - Database Search

I don't have the data but I'll sniff around for it. I would like to see some ice products in climatology; prevalence of icebergs, extent of sea ice.

Cheers

Wrong hemisphere for me though

I have lots of sources for current ice data. I mean historical data for the climatology tool.
