I have had some limited success downloading the French maps from VNF but I only seem to be able to display the first set loaded.

Pavel - I look forward to the update, is there a time frame?

My problem now is getting the program to find me. ATM it thinks i am on the east coast of the US (actually on the Canal del la Sarre in France).

The update was done about an hour after I said it will be done.
The attached screenshot shows what the downloader gets for you (Or for me in this case) using the current catalog.
That you see yourself at the US east coast most likely means you don't have a working GPS connection configured at all yet.

There is no change for me. I still see the same 'no internet connection' issue.

Also, i have tried to connect via gps but i can't work it out. I have a wifi and a Garmin glo. Unfortunately, i am skilled to the level of point and click (wireless/bluetooth) and OCPN is asking for network addresses et. That is a bit beyond me!

Well, then check your internet connection (and firewall settings), I really don't see any problem that I could fix.
You do not need to fill in any network addresses to connect a bluetooth GPS like Garmin GLO - The connection is Serial and all you should have to do is selecting the correct DataPort. Can't really be much simpler.

Nothing wrong with the internet and firewall setting are off. There has been no change to the problem since the update and as we agree the problem did exist previously so I suspect that the udated files had no effect.

the official OpenCPN version for Mac OS X El Capitan does not work with ChartDownloader because of the new security items from Apple. So you should download the charts by hand as I told you. See my posting above.

To get GPS work is another thing and has nothing to do with charts downloading. Please tell me exactly what kind and brand of GPS device you use and how it is connected to your computer. I will try to help you.

when I use the official OpenCPN version 4.4.0 with Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11.5) I get no connection with ChartDownloader plugin and a line in my syslog like that:
25.06.16 11:20:06,668 OpenCPN[1100]: App Transport Security has blocked a cleartext HTTP (http://) resource load since it is insecure.

And I get the same error information window as Steve.

What else do you need to know?

The info.plist might be get corrupted when edited with the wrong editor.
Furthermore for the not experienced user changing files of an app bundle is often a new task.
My next remark: When Apple closes security holes they have a good reason. In case of reopening it for OpenCPN in this example doesn't hurt however because OpenCPN has too many other security holes.
