I found one solution:

Settings / Vector Charts / Chart Display Style

on >>> Paper Chart cardinal boys show up OK
on >>> Simplified cardinals show up all yellow

So that is it apparently.

Still want to know how to effect a completely fresh install

Whe trying to completely remove open CPN (via the control panel / software option) AND deleting files that remain under C:\windows there still seem to be files left. I do not know where they are but if I re-install OpenCPN it still has the *old* settings somewhere.
Peter,

I have encountered the same issue a while ago on Win7 (i skipped the whole Vista builds but i think locations are introduced with it).

Look at the directory's:
C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Roaming\opencpn
C:\Users\%USER%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\OpenCPN

Just in case that the AppData directory is not in the Windows Default place, just enter
Code:
%APPDATA%
in the adressbar of Explorer (Win 7). This should lead you to the directory ...\AppData\Roaming where you'll find the opencpn directory, no matter where ...\AppData\Roaming is suited. AFAIK this directory (...\AppData\Roaming\opencpn) is the only one beside the installation directory which is created by OpenCPN.

Thanks Bart, but these folders do not exist under Vista.
I checked also with a wide search (including hidden files) of the text **OpenCPN** on C:
This shows just some files under c:\windows\ (which I deleted before a re-install)

Thanks for the feedback.

When you un-install opencpn, and then try to re-install a clean copy, you find that the **old** settings are retained.

This should not occur.

What settings do you refer to? Position? Chart catalog? Display style?

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

I just did a few more tests on both a Vista and an XP machine.
OpenCPN 2.1.0 build 520 (the 524a is unfortunately not yet available for windows)

Under both OS I have the same issue after reinstallation.
I is however no an issues that I would call an error/failure or worry.

1) Install Open CPN (with CM93 V2 2010 chart set)
2) change Settings / Display Category from OTHER (standard) to Mariner
3) change show soundings from OFF to ON
4) change show META tags from OFF to ON
5) change colors from 2 to 4
6) change CM93 zoom from 0 to 5

THEN zoom in to a location I know well at a larger scale I can remember (local harbour)

THEN close Open CPN

THEN de-install according to the software de-installation pricedures of the microsoft configuration screens.

THEN do a search for opencpn and stil find some files under c:\windows\prefetch
These are opencpn****.pf files (I have no idea what they are)

DELETED those files

After doing a re-installation of OpenCPN I find

1) programs opens with the above previously changed settings and not with the standard settings. (by the way I tried the whole procedure with differen deviations from the standard settings but always the changed version showed up again)

2) program opens with the local harbour location and scale I last looked at

3) Even if the GPS is detached it remembers after re-installation the last location of the GPS (which I specifically made different from te *local harbour* location for the test)

I have repeated this procedure now about 9 times because I wanted to test some CM93 features. The above findings are consistent.

Hope this is ueseful to you. I tremendously appreciate your efforts and am actively promoting your program after ten years of using Tsunamis Navigator Pro and various other programs.

Good luck and lots of succes.

Peter,

seems to me to be more a problem with your Windows settings rather than one with OCPN.

Where?

What does that mean exactly?
Did you use the Windows System Control (panneau de configuration) -> Programs (uninstall)?
Or did you start the 'unins000.exe' in the opencpn program directory?

If you use Windows prefetch option for applications you should possibly disable this feature or delete all entries.

There are several freeware programs available to help you doing so. One you'll find here: Windows XP Prefetch Clean And Control - Download - CHIP Online

Gunther, thank you.

This should help Dave also.
I did delete de OpenCPN via the Windows System Control and not via the unins000.exe.
I did delete the prefetch items.
But still the changed settings and chart location/scale showed up after a re-install.
So there must be something hidden somewhere related to OpenCPN
But this might be indeed another Windows automated option we do not want ;-((

Can you please check this again. Netsurfer and champ8242 are correct. Check here:Installing OpenCPN | Official OpenCPN Homepage for more instructions. This was written after user testing on the different windows systems.
If you delete "opencpn.ini ", you will find that next time you start all values are default. Reservations for what windows "prefetch" is up to.

2.1.0 GPS data + Chart + Grib

I am new to this Forum and have just started testing 2.1.0 520 (and 1.3.6)

GPS input does not get accepted , Running Laptop with XP and a serial to usb converter. Data is coming from NEMA Studio GPS simulator operating on an XP Desk Top. Data works with SeaClear II and Garmin Mapsource version 6.5). Sending correct sentences at NMEA 183 formats. Can't seem to get it to see the NEMA Studio simulator data. A GPS USB puck is recognized, but it is on a different port .

Tried it on a different laptop, same results.

The Chart Descriptor title block is blank when running 2.1.0

Grib GMT file provided by UGRIB does not display data in the GRIB file window as indicated in guide. wind speed etc. File is stored in a Temp folder.

gpsd

I was pleased to see that you have implemented the new gpsd library functions in OpenCPN version 2.1.0 build 527a. So I tried gpsd version 2.92, which is default in the latest ubuntu version. But with no luck. So I tried to install the gpsd 2.94. Still no luck. xgps read the datastream without any trouble.

Any idea? Which gpsd version have you tested with?

Regards

Zooming error when quilting ON

Dave, I tested the following:

Vista, OpenCPN 2.1.0 build 607a and the Cmap 2010 chart set

EXAMPLE: Minerva Reef (south of Tonga) at location 23 39 S 178 55 W

CM93 2010 very detailed ONLY when zoomed in correctly on the exact location. Before zooming in there is no indication whatsoever of a danger.

When QUILTING is ON you wil not find the detail chart NOR any indication that there is a reef or a detail chart available

When QUILTING is OFF you will find that the chart outline shows up at a certain larger scale (more detail) and eventually when zoomed in sufficiently, you will find the reef detail chart.

With quilting ON you will run on the reef and shipwreck your yacht (as I did there in 1981).

I would love it if it would be possible for the available charts to show on all
scales by means of the visibillity of the chart outlines. This would give the navigator a very valid reason to zoom in if there is anything at all on his route.

I tried also at Sala I Gomez (laying east of Easter Island)

Zooming in from the smallest possible scale to the largest, you will easily see Easter Island and the text for Isla Sala I Gomez. But even with Quilting OFF the island Sala I Gomez itself will not show up (nor the chart outline).

However, if you put the cursor EXACTLY on 26 27 S and 105 28 W, you will get the detailed chart of Isla Sala I Gomez.

Another disaster you can run into because OpenCPN does not provide a warning or indication of the danger ahead in all scales with the CM93 2010 chart set.

Sorry, I am not a programmer as I would love to be of more help. Hope my testing is of value.

Sure it would be nice if to mark these places with detailed plans on CM93 A - small scale chart, with no intermediate scale charts available. It could be as simple as a red cross just to mark the fact.

This is a limit in the CM93 database, somewhere you have to cut corners to cover the whole world in one gig.
Do not trust CM93 ver 2 A scale charts for passage navigation. There are heaps of omissions.
