Re: Android Development Underway

Will, this is impressive. Was wondering since CMAP support is non scheduled is there hope to see it before 1.9. How about active captain integration. With the license you use it should be very simple inclusion.

Best of luck with it. off to review what android device to get.....

Re: Android Development Underway

At first I thought "What a crappy video. Why is it sitting on that screen so long?". And then I realized my computer's sound was still muted from last night...

Amazing how much better it is with sound. And before you all make fun of me, no I didn't watch the whole thing before figuring it out.

Wow, Will, I am impressed. Looks like an android tablet is in my near future. Thanks!

Re: Android Development Underway

Dan, glad you figured it out .

Thanks guys, I hope you enjoy using MX Mariner and find it really useful. I'm always open to new feature suggestions from real boaters like myself. And, MX Mariner is now live and available for download on the Android Market.

Thanks again to everyone here who helped me beta-test. Your feedback was essential.

Re: Android Development Underway

Bought the app today and it looks great. However, I'm having trouble getting any chart to download. First tried Region 2. It got stuck at 1% and then nothing for about 10 minutes. I cancelled and tried again. It went pretty quickly to 6% and then stalled again. Then a couple of tries got no farther than 1%. Gave up on Region 2 and tried Region 7. Same sort of results. Currently stuck at 6% for about 15 minutes. Not sure if the problem is my internet connection, which can be a bit rocky . . . though other files and websites seem to be loading fine. Or maybe there's a problem with your server? Anyway, I'll try a different wifi spot with a very fast connection later this evening.

The region files are large (68 to 538MB) and the server is professionally hosted and quite fast. So, you will definitely want a solid connection (DSL or Cable with good wifi signal) to download the chart regions you need. My email address is on the about screen in the app. Definitely shoot me an email if you need help.

Re: Android Development Underway

I had a theory that it was my phone's screen going to sleep that interrupted the downloading and somehow it wouldn't resume. So I conducted a scientific experiment, and kept swiping the screen to keep it from going to sleep. Got up to 15% downloaded, and then let it go to sleep. Checked back after 5 minutes and . . . it was at 20%.

Long story short, it just kept right on going and downloaded the whole chart (Reg. 7). My apologies. Must've been my cranky internet access.

Now I can zoom in and plan our Keys trip. All's well.

Glad to hear. Yeah, you can turn the phone/tablet off or navigate back to the home screen while the download keeps going. Have fun.

Re: Android Development Underway

I parked my car next to the cell tower and downloaded the charts. Ended up doing it twice because I selected the region below the one I wanted the first time. Even at 3G it did just fine. I think it ended up with about 300 Meg, then I deleted the other region.

I have since learned in my area that there is now data bandwidth at 9 am. It has something to do with the schools, or students in school.

Wiil,

would there be any other charts besides NOOA that could run on your program.
I think if you could set up something for European charts , here is also a big booming tablet market you know.

Works very well on my Iconia tablet. Can't wait to put it to use.
Well Done!

I believe I can distribute Brazil and New Zealand charts without making special agreements with their creating hydrologic offices. (Which I plan on doing.) If you are aware of any other unencumbered charts please let me know. I haven't started work on supporting vector formats yet. However, I've been considering how to go about it.

Thanks Dan, I enjoy good reports. You can also rate MX Mariner on the android market or write a review if you feel so inclined.
