VHF Weather Modes

Trying to compare handheld VHF weather mode functions. There seem to be three prevelant ones on different brands (Standard Horizon, West Marine, ICOM): NOAA, S.A.M.E., & "weather alert"

Is there a preference? Do most of my sailing in So Cal, BVI, possibly eastern caribbean down the road.

Keep in mind that all that is US waters only. There is no weather on these VHF Wx channels outside US (may be Canada has it). Other countries use regular VHF channels for this and in the Caribbean it's just silence as there's no weather service at all.
