Use Apple iTunes to transfer files ..
iPad: About File Sharing
For example iBooks can open PDF files and Numbers can open MS Excel spreadsheets.

This is one thing that really annoys me with Apple and the iPad/iPhone. The need to use itunes and the one computer restriction. I've made the mistake before of using my desktop to do all of the syncing and then foolishly think I can also sync on my laptop. The iPod was totally wiped out.
I realise now that if I'm planning to be away from home for any extended period, I need to consider transferring my iTunes library to my Macbook and then hope it works. I love my mac toys, but this (and the resetting of the itunes library if the network drive not up)
Whilst iBooks is vary readable, Readledocs allows you to create the iPad as a remote drive on your network for drag and drop of PDFs and other document formats. It allows you to also download PDF attachments from sites and even documents attached to emails can be loaded into Readledocs folders.
Still waiting to find a feature that allows me to to connect to a network from the ipad and browse for file to upload. maybe it is there but I have not found anything other than remote "cloud" directories.

Re: The Marine iPad . . .
It would be a nice feature if I can setup readledocs to synchronise to a specific folder when connected to a lan. For now I have to figure out yourself what is new and should be added.

Re: The Marine iPad . . .
I also use GoodReader to view various file types. Yes it would be nice if there was something just like X-Traverse (which allows for waypoints, routes, tracks, GRIBs, charts) wirelessly for all types of file formats. Frankly the file sharing mechanism in iTunes is kludgy at best, but does work.
p.s. MobileMe would be the place for Apple to offer wireless transfer of files.

That requires an internet connection just to transfer files between two devices sitting in front of you which is just a silly solution that you have to resort to.
This should not need happen when you have a choice of wifi and bluetooth on both device. Apple should have on iOS a "native" way of transferring between devices.
Short of emailing it or going via itunes, I am yet to figure out how to transfer a photo or video from my iPhone to my iPad. This is just dumb on Apples front.

Re: The Marine iPad . . .
When we quote a post, when the quote is longer than the (duplicate quote) screen will allow, how do we scroll down under the quote for our reply on an ipad?
Probably doesn't make sense?
This is when using safari browser.

I know what you mean, hold your finger over the text until the little magnifying glass shows up then pull your finger down (while still holding the magnifying glass) to the bottom of the text and it will scroll down to the part you can't see.
