Shielded stereo speakers

I am looking into cockpit speakers for my boat and was hoping to get some feed back on the importance of shielding my speakers from my compass. I know some companies make speakers that are shielded. Are they neccessary?

Re: Shielded stereo speakers

The magnets in a speaker will affect a compass if put too close. AC current running through a speaker will not make any difference.

Simply put the speakers near the compass and see if it changes the compass heading. If it does then back the speakers away until there is no effect. I don't think for a typical sized boat speaker that you will notice a change any closer than about a meter away...maybe 2 meters away at the absolute most.

Re: Shielded stereo speakers

if you have an autopilot with stern mounted fluxgate compass .. the speakers can affect that as well.

Re: Shielded stereo speakers

So am I best to stay with so called shielded speakers (do they really work) or no speakers at all in the cockpit.
