Satellite TV in the Med

Hi,

I would like to install satellite TV before we head to the Med next year. I was planning on installing a KVH M2 system.

We'd like to be able to received broadcasts in English for news, documentaries etc.

Can anyone give me a heads up on what they're using in the Med , where you've used it (e.g. Turkey, Spain) and how well it works.

If the only option is a massive dome I won't be doing it.

To get BBC and most UK channels. ( either via Sky or freesat ) you have to be able to receive Astra 2D, the footprint of which struggles to be received east of Nice, in France. the KVH 37cm dishs struggles beyond this, you need the 45cm dishes. I had a KVH M4 there and reception just about worked in france.

Astra 2 (A/B) can be easily received but most of it is non-english.

It can be done but not on a M2.

I'm sure you're probably aware of it, but you can get BBC and other English language news stations anywhere on an SSB radio.

You can stream almost any kind of news or video documentaries wherever you have a decent Internet connection. I like to stream NPR radio, which is easily done even with an average mobile phone data connection. With a HSPDA or LTE data connection, you should have no trouble with streaming video (obviously you will need the right data plan). Mobile phone data is extremely good in most of Europe, and quite cheap. I get 2 gigabytes a month for 10 pounds a month on TMobile in the UK (pay as you go).

For entertainment, you can load thousands of movies on a single 2 terabyte portable hard drive.

The easiest thing to do for the Med is as follows.

Down load FILMON.COM all lower case. It gives free all BBC chanells All ITV chanells and about 32 other channels ALL in English. Then just plug into the TV and enjoy. We have been doing this from UK to Cyprus with No Problems.

The only thing to make sure is that you have a good internet connection

Re- filmon dot com, no need to download the desktop software, if you do, you will get pop ups all the time asking you to register and subscribe. Stick with the online web browser based one. I've used it for quite a while and it works well on a decent connection giving you the majority of the UKs freeview channels, including all the BBC, ITV, CH4 etc as well as extras like Dave, Film4, Yesterday, More4, etc.

Be aware that this will use ALOT of bandwidth though, if youre on a connection that charges extra for bandwidth, it will prove to be expensive!

As for proper Satellite, I am in Eastern Spain and know a couple of people that use a 60cm dish in the marina that seems to work well, the further south you get the worse it will be and looking at the coverage maps, I don't think any signal is possible as far East as Turkey.
