Re: Problem with Sharp Autopilot

It wouldn't be much trouble to replace this drive unit with a hydraulic unit. Just $$$ and a little work. However if you can find a machine shop that can fix it for you at a reasonable price, that would work too. I recommend you check the motor brushes while you have it apart.

The rest of the unit seems fine. But first You need to find out, which was the reason for this failure. Lack of lubricant (grease)?
Agree a good machine shop could make a new gear for the unit but also agree find out why the failure and make sure the rest of the drive is in good condition.

At this point it might be cheaper to buy a new drive.

Re: Problem with Sharp Autopilot

Hi everyone,
My father recently bought a sailboat with the auto pilot SeaPilot Sharpe & co.
It was working perfectly at the beginning and it suddenly stop working.
When turned on, we can hear the motor, the rudder is not triggered.
If we turn the Trim to right it is working but when we try to turn it on the left it does not work. Also the left/right switch is not working.
Everything is oiled and greased.
Anyone would have any idea what it could be?

Depending on the sort of hydraulic pump you have, you may want to verify that it can bear the weight of your boat. You can find out how much weight the pump can carry by consulting the manufacturer's specifications.
