Pactor Modem

Having paid a kings ransom for high speed modems and Ethernet cards in the 80's and watched the prices go down to a fraction of the cost, I have not been able to bring myself to pay what I see as an outrageous sum for a Pactor.

Has anyone had any luck with other options?

Re: Pactor Modem

Keep your eye's open for a later Pactor 3. There are quite a few out there that were modified by the factory and are "licensed to Pactor 4" most people don't know about them. I found one on e bay that nobody wanted cause it was a "3" I e mailed the seller, got the s/n and called pactor, turned out it was licesed/modified to a pactor 4. Got it for $125.00. Great investment.

You can mess about with a sound card in your laptop. If your just getting started you'll learn a lot taking this approach.

My Pactor 3 is reliable and is one of our safety critical systems so we consider the cost worthwhile. The price of the proprietary Pactors hasnt changed much in years.

Re: Pactor Modem

Black Cat's weather fax app works well on my iPads.

A modem would be a nice addition to my SSB.

Thanks for the replies.

Tell me more about Black Cats weather fax. Sounds interesting. We have an SSB and an IPad air.

Re: Pactor Modem

The price of the Pactors isn't going to change for a pretty long time, because they are a proprietary design, manufactured by only one company.

There is an alternative, called WINMOR. It does the same thing as a Pactor modem, but it uses your computer and its soundcard. It is a little slower, and a little bit less reliable, than the latest Pactor hardware modems, but the big difference is... IT IS FREE!
