Mac + 4g Hotspot with GPS

2010 MBP
new sprint overdrive pro 4g hotspot.

the hot spot has built in gps with nmea output. BUT after installing the driver from the hotspot, i can't pickup the gps feed in any nav app. tried it tethered and wireless. anyone tried this?

if i get this working it should be great. 4g broadband in port at corpus christi. gps on the mac for nav.

Not sure since I am not familiar with it, but you may need to go into the applications preferences and make sure it can receive (or set it to receive) the inputs from the card.

Re: Mac + 4g Hotspot with GPS

What nav software are you using? Could be what willjcocks says.

Also you can use an independent gps utility to verify that data is being received into the laptop. Then you'll know it should work in the nav app if set correctly. Usually the port setting or baud rate is the issue.

edit.... I see you have tried more than one app now.

Here's a free utility I used to test with.

I thought if I used a simple utility to verify operation first, and then integrate into the nav software, I would be empowered to know it should work if I could get it right. Wasn't very hard, but you are using a more unique gps source than most.

Since your device is relatively new to the market, maybe check for software updates to your mac operating system as well.

edit..... I've used bluetooth and usb connections, but not wifi to a gps data stream, so that's a new variable to me.

Re: Mac + 4g Hotspot with GPS

the wifi unit has a built in GPS not just triangulation based on towers. it's supposed to output a nmea stream either on USB or over the network.
