Inverter maxes out CPU

I have a little Black and Decker inverter. It boasts of doing 1.74 amps!I tried powering my laptop with it.I figure the laptop probably needs a bit more than 1.74 amps but I tried it.It seems to power the laptop .The battery indicator read "98% not charging" .Just like it does when plugged into the shorepower.
With no applications open the CPU reading was minimal. Then I opened Open CPN 2.5.0.After a few moments the CPU went to 100%.Open CPN appeared to work normally.Battery indicator continued to read 98% not charging. The inverter did not get hot and bothered.
So I am wondering if it is ok to run the laptop like this or if there is a risk of damaging it.

Re: Inverter maxes out CPU

Look on the laptop's "brick" to see what its power requirements are. Mine (a Dell) says 1.5 amps AC and 3.34 amps DC at 19.5 V.

You inverter's spec of 1.74 amps (presumably AC) sounds high. Most are rated in watts and the cigarette plug in types generally are about 150 watts. 150 watts is about 15 amps DC input which is all a cigarette lighter can supply.

In any case a 150 watt inverter will power most any laptop. Don't know why your battery indicator (the one on the toolbar at the bottom?) says 98% and not charging. I had a Dell power brick that did that on house AC and replaced it and it no longer does it.

Re: Inverter maxes out CPU

My "brick" is the same as yours.1.5 amps AC.DC 3.4 amps @ 19v.
My laptop does not charge if the battery is above 95% and I put that info in to show that the inverter was fully powering the laptop.
I should mention that Open CPN uses very little CPU on shorepower.I dont think its a problem with Open CPN.
