How to show ocean position on blog page

I we are soon, I mean very soon to head off. Down from the snow and cold to the South Pacific. Have seen blog pages with a positional track map. Anyone with knowledge how this can be done? Cheers

How to show ocean position on blog page

If you use Airmail/Sailmail, it has an included template for easy use with Sailblogs. It willinclude position report data and its also easy to attach small .jpg files that will show up on the blog.

Your position will also show up on their map, and will link to google maps.

As for doing the same thing with generic blog sites, I have no idea.

YACHT-INFO VE7QFQ

This is the best site we found to show your waypoint sent via Airmail. Th
e bonus they seem to be keeping the record for a long time.

Enjoy

... you could use a YellowBrick ...

Yellowbrick Tracking - truly global satellite tracking beacons for yacht racing, adventures, treks, expeditions and challenges

Re: How to show ocean position on blog page

There is a N. American equivalent of YB function. You could try one of SPOT devices, SPOT Gen3 for example: SPOT SATELLITE MESSENGER :: HOME PAGE

You could then link from your blog to one of two possible tracking pages/maps, or export the position to your computer and with some HTML work integrate them into your blog: Saving Your Message Data

You need to purchase a device and monthly/yearly contract.

Re: How to show ocean position on blog page

Thanks Richard and Hoppt,

I do not want to buy another piece of kit. Boat is almost awash now:-) . Also just more expense, which is now an issue since no pay check arriving now a days.

Re: How to show ocean position on blog page

OK...really not my forte, but how about using Google Earth and add a "placemark" of your location by manually imputing your lat/lon. Then use "save image" and upload the created image (.jpg) to your blog. It is rudamentary, but no extra cost or equipment.

I also have a navigation app (MotionX-GPS) on my iphone that will allow me to share my location via Facebook, Twitter, or send the location to a specific email address.

So I am sure the technology is out there and hopefully someone will clue you into it, but in the mean time, maybe these 2 ideas will get you by until then.

Re: How to show ocean position on blog page

I dont like an automated update because if any of the portions of the thing makes it stop working then your family will think you are dead and call the coast guard.

Have a look at my Google earth plug in thingy, look at the bottom of the spinning globe and see the link.

It doesnt work on iPads but hey, who cares

Its fun and easy to update using google earth maps.

Our Life At Sea - Map of where we are, have been, and going.

Unfortuanetly it seems difficult to find this sort of thing that works on all computer formats. The idiots so battle each other that one is dead, and one too rich to give a damn.

Re: How to show ocean position on blog page

I was just wondering about being in the ocean. I could send one of my kids the email through airmail and she can add it?

Just was wondering. I have 2 major jobs on the mast top and then finished. Well finished for a while and then as soon as it stops snowing we are heading south. Trouble with all this technology almost need a full time tech to get it up and stay running. God all I wanted was to go sailing:-)

Re: How to show ocean position on blog page

I've done it offshore before with a satphone updating a file using ftp which a website used with Google maps to display position. While ago and can't remember exactly how, but it was a little dos batch file which appended the position via ftp, didn't use much airtime, and not sure if it would work over ham/SSB.

How to show ocean position on blog page

During a passage from St Marten & across the Pacific last year we used a great website which plotted your position on Google Earth & was developed by one of the CF members. We were the first ones to use it on a trans ocean passage & it performed brilliantly getting our positions via SMS through our Iridium Extreme Satphone.

BUT the downside is that he has now shutdown the site apparently due to lack of interest from the sailing community which is a real shame as it was great and could accept a lot of different inputs sources. The site was called bluewatersailingdata.com and his name is shown on the site.

Maybe if enough interest was generated he would consider reviving it but at this time I know he is cruising himself but I did speak with him via email recently.

This was by far the best free tracker that I have seen and I did a lot of research prior to our passage & this one ticked all the boxes. As I said it's such a shame that it is not available now.
