AIS visualization mini project

Now full time a liveaboard, I have more time to geek out on marine electronics. I started playing with with my AIS receiver and decided to write a little code to visualize traffic around me on Google Maps. I know the (many) existing solutions out there, this was mostly for me to geek out

This is with an iAIS using a masthead VHF antenna from South San Francisco. I have reception for 15+ miles, which is not bad. And while there are many boats sailing out there, they are clearly not using the right navigation_status codes

Code is available on GitHub https://github.com/itemir/aisplay if anyone wants to poke at it.

Nice, but perhaps duplicates some of the work which has already been done. Did you try to install OpenCPN and charts for the area? It will give you more detial for each vessel and will also capture other types of AIS messages.

Cheers, ....Erik.

Re: AIS visualization mini project

Thanks, yes I have OpenCPN, iNavX and some others with local charts ;-) As I mentioned, this is mostly a geeky satisfaction and not an attempt to replace an existing solution. I like learning things by getting hands-on.

It also contributed that reading the OpenCPN code would take longer than building this one
