AIS Transceiver in VHF

This might be old news but I just got back from the Seattle boat show.

Standard Horizon will an AIS transceiver out in March, price about $800 (currently have receive only models)

I'm a big proponent of KISS and have always been satisfied with SH and will be looking forward to this. This may be old news to some, but a happy surprise to me.

Its new news. They have been waiting for FCC approval for ages. It must have come through.

There are two possibilities:

--you are talking about old news, the GX6500 VHF Marine Band Class-D Radio and Class-B AIS Transponder, which was first mentioned in October, 2016, or

--you are talking about some entirely new product, just an AIS transponder, what has never been mentioned before.

Please clarify which product you saw at the boat show.

Re: AIS Transceiver in VHF

I did not see the product. SH currently has a class B receive only VHF for sale. The new one with a transceiver is coming in March.

You connect the AIS VHF to the chart plotter. Then you can see AIS transmitting ships on your plotter.

Re: AIS Transceiver in VHF

Having been following the gx6500 since it was announced towards the end of last year, looks to be a nice piece of equipment especially as it's nmea 2k compliant too - now I just need to find a way to purchase and smuggle it aboard somehow without the Admiral noticing it

Damn.. $800... Thats a pretty premium price...

I know I know.. All the other Transceivers are like $500 and you now don't need an antenna splitter..

I guess its just sticker shock!

Hi, I bought a Satndard Horizon 2150 VHF (some years ago) with AIS receiver and coupled to a Garmin GPSMAP 3010C and works fine, cost ? around 250$?.

Its no bargain, but since it is a radio and an AIS transciever and an antenna splitter the price is not too bad.

They don't have antenna splitter. you will need a second antenna.

I have my current AIS transceiver connected to spare VHF antenna on aft rail.

Wow.. really... That would be a deal killer for me.. I love my shared antenna and splitter. We see class A boats over 25 miles most of the time.

Re: AIS Transceiver in VHF

I actually prefer it on separate antennas - less chances of interference, one less electronic device, and I don't need to see boats that far away (too distracting)

There is no single answer for any boat. For us we prefer seeing class A boats moving at 18knots a long ways out. Its especially helpfull crossing busy shipping lanes at night.
