Adding a Transponder to my GX2150

I've currently got a SH GX2150 combo AIS receiver / VHF radio. Thing is awesome and I love it. Got a remote mic for it which sits in the cockpit and I really couldn't be happier.

I'd like to add a transceiver to the mix, and I assume I need a splitter as well.

My question is whether or not the GX2150 will be smart enough, since we're talking the same MMSI number, to not view my transceiver as a "different" vessel. I'd like to have the GX2150 not always thinking there is danger imminent.


Any clues on this one?

I don't know the answer to this, but Standard Horizon tech support has always immediately answered all questions I have sent them.

I do know that our GX2150 does not get confused with our DSC handheld, which shares the same MMSI number. We use them to call each other all the time and poll each other's position. My suspicion is it will also work this way for the AIS.

As long as you use the same MMSI you should not experience any issue.

Yes, you need an active splitter.

I've got the SH 2100 and the MMSI filtering answer isn't that simple on that unit.

Depending on firmware version (needs to be sent in for upgrade) it can be smart about ignoring your own target MMSI or not on the built in display.
The NMEA feed from it will even with the latest firmware (upgraded in August) still send your MMSI target info, thus making It pretty useless.

I re-routed my plotter to take the AIS NMEA feed from my Em-trak tranceiver.

I just want to point out that aside from this issue I've been super happy with both the SH product and their awesome support!

You guys rock, really. I've always had great luck with Icom and I still dig their products but Standard Horizon really raised the mark with the GX2150 and the customer service blows Icom out of the water.

Just an update if anyone ever comes across this thread. I installed my splitter and AIS transponder with great results. Everything worked out like a champ.

I just did this last week. disconnected the nmea output from the vhf to the chart plotter, and wired the new ais to the chart plotter instead.

I'm not sure what you're asking. do you actually look at the screen on the radio? I certainly don't.

I don't have a chartplotter so the radio (and RAM unit) is the only visual display for me.
