Hi James
That is my mainsail.The spinaker pole resides in a 5" abs coupling fastened to the boom with a loop at the mast to hold the other end.The pole topping lift stays connected so that when it is deployed all we have to do is put the sheet on one end and the other end clips onto the mast ring.

I can recall sweeping up drifts of them with a broom as a kid in Ontario (just a few miles from Brockville). Out west, on the Columbia River they are called 'river moths' and we are just at the beginning of their season. They may or may not be to your taste, Mark, but using a feather version of them often converts into a nice fat trout.

Shadflys aka river moths are quite a different animal than a mayfly. Shadflys carry their wings folded down along their backs and mayflies carry them folded up (until their spinner stage when they are spread out to the side).

I'll take a Big MacBobo anytime!

They taste awful.They get in your mouth,nose eyes and ears.The good thing is they don't bite and only last for a week to ten days.Newborn ducks and geese feast on them.
One neat thing is that you can tell if the main is overtrimmed because there is a three foot dia. vortex of shads parallel to the leach all the way up the sail.
