Pics Of Maltese Falcon Trans Atlantic Race

I ran into the Maltses Falcon while out fishing off of Nova Scotia. I seen the boat come up on AIS and steemed 14 miles out of the way to get the pics. Very cool to see sailing.

Mark, thanks for posting those. We mostly see publicity shots of these mega boats, with nubile chick draped around the owners neck and lots of champers in view. It's nice to see her actually doing her thing.

I don't lust after such behemoths, but this one is kinda pretty under sail.

Cheers,

JIm

Re: Pics Of Maltese Falcon Trans Atlantic Race

I saw it almost a month ago in Newport, but it was gone when I got back down there from Maine. You know it's cool, but... Like so many other "boats" in the Newport harbor, it really struck me and my (completely apolitical) buddy as a sort of sad commentary on what's gone seriously out of whack in our society over the past generation. Sort of like those old robber baron mansions on the Newport cliff walk. They're pretty to look at, but I'm glad our country eventually woke up from that era.

That's been a frequent topic of conversation on this cruise from the South up to Maine and back this summer-- with lots of different family and friends as crew. We see these megayachts. We anchor off these shorelines bristling with megamansions. What the heck happened?

At least the shoreline and the water are still beautiful. And most of the folks you meet are wonderful. And I'm living proof that people of limited means can enjoy it by water. (Readers of some other threads may remember I'm the guy who paid $2000 for his boat.) What the heck am I complaining about? I'm having as much fun as the owner of the Maltese Falcon, but for $400 million less.

It is, after all, a great country! (With apologies to the hard working Canuck who started this thread )

Mirabella has been here in Bermuda for a few weeks. She is presently anchored in that deep water area on our North Shore between #25 and the Elbow cardinal mark, for those who have our charts.
Not the boat for my tastes, but a beauty none the less.

Ain't that the truth. The Falcon seems especially evocative of classic designs. Thanks for chasing her down, Mark. Nice to see.

Re: Pics Of Maltese Falcon Trans Atlantic Race

Very nice pictures, thanks! I got some shots of the Maltese Falcon leaving the docks in Falmouth, Antigua - using just sails (and most likely a big generator to run all that rigging out) and she is an impressive beast indeed!

If you haven't read the book about the owner and the boat, it's great! "Mines bigger than yours" quick easy read...
