Can't find a good sweater..

My favorite Polar Fleece brands... Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, Patagonia, or The North Face.

I commonly wear layers for flexibility... Silk longjohns/underlayer, a mid layer, and Mountain Hardwear Windstopper shell. I'll also wear longjohn bottoms under quickdry hiking shorts when it's not so cold... silk doesn't get as stinky as Polyprop IMO.

I love my fishermen sweaters!! SO much better then fleece...warmer and better looking for sure. In a pinch try LLBean online for them or even Roots. I've had some of my wool sweaters for over 25 years...and they still look new. It pays to get a good one!!

No arguments against synthetic materials. However, I would expect a captain who sails a Morris Frances 26 to wear nothing other than pure wool. . . a nice Irish tweed cap and a Danish hand carved smoking pipe would complete the assemblage. . . oh, and of course, a tattered, well-worn copy of Conrad's "The Secret Sharer" lying haphazardly in the cockpit. I like the US Navy issue mock turtleneck, it's not too heavy. I also have a heavy wool sweater from Aran. I heard praises about Faero Island sweaters.

Also a nice silk scarf keeps the neck warm and dry. Silk is also warm when wet.

Nobody said anything about moths. I'm working my way through nice wool sweaters, but buying pile and acrylics. Note that pile usually comes in three different weights: 100, 200 and 300. 100 is light, of course. 200 is fairly heavy, and suitable for sailing, and 300 you may not find. Some pile has the wind-stop layer between light layers of pile. I second the choice of color as yellow, but it is rare. Hunter's orange is more common.

Have you checked second hand shops like Goodwill? Many folks bring such stuff to FL and find out they don't need it anymore.

Try a google search for HOLBROOK sweaters, Swedish outfit. Very expensive as sailing sweaters go, but good selection of styles, nautically fashionable, and constructed with sailors in mind. Mine is a pullover with zip-up neck (turtle), adjustable elasticized bottom hemline, and best of all -- heavy cotton with full lining that cuts the wind that used to cut me. Wife and I found ours in a shop on Martha's Vineyard (Vineyard Vines?). For oiled wool, go Irish.

While I wear mostly fleece of various weights when it gets really cold there is no substitute for wool for sweaters and socks, the synthetics are not even close. I cant buy 100% wool socks local so order them online. I really like that I can wear the socks for a week and they don't smell at all.

Got my wool sweater from a drunken Norwegian sailor passed out on the dock. Check around a Sons of Norway Lodge around the 17th of May.

In truth I wear one my Grandmother knitted for me. I have a photo of my Great Grandfather wearing a similar one on the deck of his ship. Some things just feel right...

I still have a massively heavy grey wool sweater I've saved for just the right times. It was given to me 40 years ago. I was told it was British Navy issue. Its is in great shape. I found a lot searching for Royal Navy wool sweater; Irish wool sweater etc. Many listings in military surplus stores.

One other item to add for warmth and comfort. I found that my cycling long leggings wick water away & keep me warm. They also keep away the wool itch. Try also adding a cycling top. Easy to clean & helps keep sweat away from your clothes.

I love my Gill sweater. It is a wool synthetic blend with a fleece lining. High collar with a partial zip. They come in blue and grey.

I am down inin Caribbean now, but keep it in storage for trips back to the states.
