In summation, an airlines pilot instructor talks about when to reduce automation so that you have increased control and situational awareness. It's 25 minutes long but a good video, especially if you also fly.

Now lemme tell you a story: AirNewfoundland [Canucks will discern where this is going :-)] had just received a whopping subsidy from "the Feds" and bought their first secondhand 707. Mirabel (YMX Montreal) had just opened. AirNewf is approaching above a 9/10 overcast. Copilot, having the con, can't find the airport. Cap'n sez "Oi 'ave 'er", and at that precise moment he spots YMX through a hole in the clouds. Doing exactly what our friend in the video is advocating, he cranks the airplane up on one wing, drops the nose and dives through the hole. Maintaining perfect situational awareness he smacks his maingear down just where grass becomes tarmac, throws on the reverse thrust, pushes the yoke forward and stands on the brakes. His nosewheel comes to a shuddering stop just where tarmac becomes grass.

Cap'n leans back, wipes his brow, gets his knocking knees under control and exclaims: " Jasus, Mary 'n' Joseph! Thas the shartest ronway Oi've EVER seen!".

Jimmy looks out the cockpit window and sez; "Yis, bot look 'ow woide it is!"
