Re: A Cap for Yachting

It's been a while since I added anything to this thread. I thought I'd offer a more humble yachting cap. Just add a U.S. Navy CWO boatswain collar device to a Greek sailors cap.

Cheers,

Fair winds Bruce! At first I thought the two anchors were a teddy bear face!! (That’s before zooming) [emoji199]
Enjoy your time on the water with your new cap.

Re: A Cap for Yachting

I have....last time I counted....at least two dozen caps with various insignia's.......and I wear them all. I have no preference. Just pick what's on top of the pile after my wife has done with the washing.

I've lost several due to high wind conditions, but if I'm in a store...any store...that sells caps...will invariably pick one up to replace the one lost.

This saves me a lot of angst, as I like to protect my head against the sun...so I wear one mostly all the time...indoors or outdoors, as I never know when I'm ducking my head out.

My Boston Scally fits 'the bill' for me [unfortunately I'm no longer a harbor rat and miss my years in Boot Key Harbor and sailing The Keys:

Well, at the end of the day....imo....a hat or cap is there to protect your head.....whatever is emblazon on there has little to do with the hat/cap performance...

Like the gazillion things one sees emblazoned on t-shirts..has little to do with actual garment..merely trying to promote a product, a business, etc..

Re: A Cap for Yachting

This is an old thread, but still a relevant. unanswered question: which is the best sailing hat (especially for hot weather)? I needs something breathable, washable, and with a wide enough brim to provide sun protection to face and neck -- but most important, will not flop around in a stiff breeze!!

Sounds like the holy grail, doesn't it. Please let us know if you find one that fills the bill, many of us are still looking.

Re: A Cap for Yachting

Such a hat as suggested seems entirely suitable for the captain of one’s paid crew whilst one would wear a panama and a blazer with one’s yacht club badge on.

In Britain wearing such a hat in most yacht clubs might be the subject of derision or that you are the non-sailing brother-in-law who was unsure of what to wear. Alternatively that you are an admiral in the Swiss navy.

Myself I favour a Tilly hat. A baseball cap is unsuitable as my ears get burned.

I think I put this in the thread earlier, but my Shelta hat fits the bill.
I have the Osprey (my second one after the first went swimming).

Tilley LTM5 without question - they're not cheap but you get what you pay for!

Tilley works well, however overpriced. What you save on cancer treatment will pay for it many times over.

Re: A Cap for Yachting

Shelta works well! Buy a size larger than the measured size. I like to wear a headband to keep sweat out of my eyes, so the larger size works great for that also. Already survived a downpour and looks brand new. Perfect hat found! Case closed.

A Cap for Yachting

Something like this:
A. Oversized brim for extra shade and protecting glasses/sunglasses from spray.
B. Neck shield that isn’t so tight there’s no airflow.
C. Chin strap for windy days.
D. Cheap enough that you can buy multiple and don’t worry about 1 getting stained or blowing away in a moment of carelessness.
