I hear you on that, but even with my fancy phone and world data plan it's surprising how quickly a cell phone is as valuable as a paper weight. Plus if you go out paddleboarding, swimming, or just hanging around on the beach you're outside of phone land.

I have used a Suunto Observer for years. I am hard on watches and this watch has served well. I took my watch up many mountains, jungles, rivers etc. Barometer, compass, altimeter and two time zones. The Observer is not a dive model though. I would look at their models made for diving were I buying one now. I would assume a good cruising watch would double for a good diving watch too.

Mine is waterproof to 50M, has dual time zones, stopwatch and a countdown timer (good for starting races and for night watch catnaps).I won't tell you what it is because the Ebay price has doubled to over $20 lately and I don't want any bidding competition.

A cruiser wants an accurate watch which won't endanger your health on the streets of Colon, Panama. However, my wife had one of mine stolen off her wrist in Aden by the Somali refugee kids...

Barometer? Thats a fancy watch, be easier to hang a $25 bro by the wheel, but if you want one on a watch, I'd say get a SUUNTO. Had several bits o SUUNTO dive gear and still dive a Favor S computer.

I have 3 watches. A rolex Oyster Perpetual (never wear it - too big & heavy), a personalized swiss that I wear on shore, very nice, very dressy, and a no-name given to me by a Renault dealer. This is my sailing watch - takes any beating I dish out, and should it go overboard - well no crying

Gotta admit I loved my old battery powered 200 m Seiko divers watch. She did me for generations. Everything from commercial fishing to free diving then getting put through the washing machine. It never lost a beat, albeit the dial being a bit skewed after I neglected to take it off practicing my left jab on a bag. After numerous battery changes my watchmaker advised me she was at the end of her water resistant life. I gave her up for one of the last real Zodiac divers watches. Still, if I could do her again, I would be a happy man.

Timex Ironman w/ Indiglo. 10 years so far. Several velcro bands, and two batteries later it's still waterproof to 200 meters! As a bonus, it has a special depth alarm that beeps as you near the depth limit. Damn loud too!

I'm another satisfied Casio Pathfinder customer. +1 Still on my first and it's been a good one. My only complaint is the temperature function is kind of useless. It picks up your body heat so it's always several degrees to high.

I personally look at the baro display on a regular basis and when I take bearings, the compass works well. On my steel boat, I have to hold it at chin level, however, otherwise it goes wonky!

Just a note to those with scratched crystals. If you have a plastic crystal, scratched can be removed with toothpaste. won't work on mineral glass though. I stay with sapphire or plastic crystals as mineral glass (used on many less expensive watches) will scratch and can't be fixed.
