Readers and Writers?

Library is about reading, right? But reading is a secondary activity. There would be nothing to read if there was nothing written. Obviously, people visiting this library are all readers.
My question is: are there any writers among us? I am convinced there are one or even quite few. If I am right, I would be delighted to know who is a writer here and how we all can read your books. Hopefully, these are published books. But even if not, maybe you are ready and willing to share your creation with us?

Re: Readers and Writers?

I'm an author. I have written 4 books. Google "Tom's Adventures in Alaska by Matthew Green" and you should find them in the format and store that you like. They have also been released to libraries, but I'm pretty sure none have been picked up yet. Look in used book stores online as the occasional paperback copy becomes available. Thanks.

Re: Readers and Writers?

Great thread! But I am interested in sailing/ cruising books. Most notably books written, say, In the last five years, which for some reason are few and far between. ( why is that ?)
Most cruising books, about the authors personal journey,( like herb payson's books which I love btw), are about cruising in 70s 80s 90s even if recently published. Why? I realize they may have been the glory days of cruising but I Know people still cruise, maybe just not writing? Or have blogs taken the place of books? Sorry for thread drift, and I would love to be proven wrong.

Re: Readers and Writers?

The rules on this forum don't really permit authors to "advertise" their books, which might explain some of it.

My wife's written a few big pieces in some magazines and has a novel almost done. I wrote a loved-and-hated book on sailing in Mexico. Joshua Slocum did his trip, largely, to write about it so I often joke with my friends that someone should be the first person to sail around the world and not write a book about it.

But writing is a huge deal in my family. It's up there with exercise and hanging out with my kids in that I'll make time and prioritize it. I didn't really start caring about the writing process until a few years ago so I've got a ways to go. Hoping to have a sci-fi novel knocked out before 2015; we'll see!

!
Not exactly. Unbeknownst to most members, most mods (altho perhaps not all) do have a heart, and we do tend to overlook one or two plugs/links to their books... as you well know!

What we don't like is when the plugging becomes spam like.

By paying a very reasonable amount, any member can upgrade to become a vendor and spread their (professionally made) sig banners and sig links around the forums like the plague if they so wish... but there is no requirement, of course, to do so!

Same here.
When i'm looking for cruising narratives i'm actually looking for inspiration.
I recently bought one such narrative, on the advice of a thread on this forum, and despite the witty prose, it was actually a very negative tome, from a guy who sailed a little downwind (USA to NZ) then stopped for a refit. I felt like i'd been duped into helping top-up his re-fit kitty.
For me the holy grail of cruising narratives would be about a bloke exactly like me, with the same inexperience and meagre funds, getting out there and having years of adventure. That's the kind of inspiration i need to keep the fire going to get out there...
That's impossible of course, but i'll read things as close to that as i can. I no longer buy books about retired surgeons sailing their 500k boat around the Med on $2k per month...

Well... everyone who knows me keeps telling me I should write a book about my life.. for some reason they think its amazing..
Only two problems.. firstly folk would consider it fiction..
the other is I can't write to save my life..
Tried it once about my first solo ocean crossing..
when I'd finished I put it away..
5 months later I dug it out and started reading...
I was asleep by page 7...

Just market it as a sleep aid rather than an adventure story.

Writing is like playing golf: everyone can swing a club . . . very few swing it well.
