As the time approaches to head off into the blue yonder, I'm thinking of vaccinations, just wondering what other peoples thoughts are on them, sometimes you think the side effects of them maybe worse than the actual risk.

Re: vaccinations

If you are a professional foreign going seaman from the UK the Yellow Fever vaccination is more or less mandatory if you are going into the tropics; a condition of employment. As for side effects for this one they are minimal, and it lasts for 10 years. I'm on my 4th one without any side-effects so far as I can tell. The rest I'd be guided by a medical professional. If you are cruising and perhaps visiting more out of the way places do you want to risk serious illness in a place with less than adequate medical care? Ultimately it is your choice.

Re: vaccinations

Regarding the science and politics, I'll link to this piece by PBS / Frontline, arguably the most independent and serious producers of content in the world: Video: The Vaccine War | Watch FRONTLINE Online | PBS Video

Regarding myself, my wife, and my 1 1/2 year old daughter, we're about halfway through all the stuff we needed to get from our physician. She consulted the WHO who sets the advice, and then there are some countries (many in fact) that will not let you in unless you can show various vaccinations.

Basically in nations that know what epidemics look like, the luxury of being afraid the vaccine is not available.
