Pirates in Gulf of Mexico?

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I just found this news link and I was blissfully unaware/ignorant of the "problem" in the Gulf of Mexico. Does anyone have info on this at all?

Not the Gulf, but Caribbean with more focus on recreational boats.

Re: Pirates in Gulf of Mexico?

This is the only event shown on the ICC map for 2018-2019.

No events shown on CSSN maps in GOM for any year (not sure if they include GOM).

Appears to be a one off event.

Re: Pirates in Gulf of Mexico?

If the boat in this report is the same in the Fox News report the pirates attempted to board but must have been repelled.

Location detail:
Ciudad del Carmen Anchorage

Narrations:
04.08.2019: 1200 UTC: Posn: 18:48.8N - 091:47.8W, Ciudad del Carmen Anchorage, Mexico.
Crew onboard a maintenance pontoon reported ship's stores and properties were stolen. A machete was found near the store room. Master later received information from another vessel in the vicinity, that robbers had attempted to board their vessel also. Incident reported to the Mexican Coast Guard/Navy. Three patrol boats were dispatched to investigate.

Interesting. Is it possible that the other attacks mentioned in the news article (linked to in the first post) were not reported?

The reported events only show an attack on a single vessel, which other vessels/platforms were attacked?

As someone who has done law enforcement from ships and small boats...I'd caution to make sure you spend some time ensuring you're proficient actually operating your weapon in a confined, rolling space before you put yourself and anyone around you in danger trying to be a tough guy. As I've mentioned before, when we threw a barrel over and used it for target practice, the safest place was probably inside the barrel! It's hard to grasp how hard it is to safely operate a firearm on a boat underway until you've actually operated a firearm from a boat underway.

I've learned that pirates are also in the BVI charter management business. I thought Sir Francis Drake cleaned them all the pirates out centuries ago.

Reasonably likely, lots of crimes go unreported, even to officials.
