Nobeltec not responding to GPS puck

I have just installed my old Nobeltec into another old laptop with Windows XP. It worked fine on the old one, but now everything is fine except it does not see the GPS puck plugged into the USB port and "NO GPS" shows in red in the console. The light on the puck flashes happily.

I have done the "ports configure thing" and speed is set at 7200 (not sure if that's right) and I have installed the driver from a disc. Any suggestions?

Been awhile. Try 4800baud. Port config on XP was tricky at times-no known reason. Are you using USB or serial ?

Re: Nobeltec not responding to GPS puck

Have just checked Virtual Navigation Suite in my Vista laptop which is not XP, the baud rate is 4800 and the port it is looking for is #8. I know this is not a direct match up but hope it can help.

Re: Nobeltec not responding to GPS puck

Call Nobeltec, have their technician go via remote into your computer and diagnose and fix the problem at no charge.

I had the same problem, turned out to be a a Nobeltec update that needed to be done.

Re: Nobeltec not responding to GPS puck

I have found that pucks are not really reliable in this situation. I got spotty results trying to feed a PC. Once I went to a mushroom on the pushpit, it works like a charm.

Hi,
In XP days the Gps data stream got confused and windows detected it as a mouse not a gps. Unplug it and reboot, start Nobeltech and then plug the puck back in. Check your com port and speed should be 4800. You may have to reboot a couple of times.

Re: Nobeltec not responding to GPS puck

Hi. I am new here and I am trying to figure out how to get GPS on nobeltec software for an old lap running win XP with no USB ports. I have no idea how it's supposed to get a GPS signal without some sort of USB dongle. The guy said it had been working for years under the previous owner. I'm not sure how to proceed. Any advice will be welcome.

Re: Nobeltec not responding to GPS puck

Perihelion: A USB puck on an XP computer will need a driver for the puck. If it is a relatively new puck you may not find an XP driver.

If you have a 9 pin com port jack on the laptop then you could try one of the Garmin handhelds that have NMEA 0183 outputs. Garmin has a accessory Power data cable that has a garmin plug for the GPS and bare wire to connect to a DB9 female plug. If you don't have a serial jack on the computer you can get a serial to USB adapter to complete the connection through a USB port. The usb to serial will need a driver so check that the adapter has an XP driver.
