I have not used this BTW but it seems pretty straightforward.

I do have the iPad component video cable to stream to televisions.

Thanks. Looked at the Apple VGA adapter and 40south's comments and saw the same reviews. Seems like the function of the VGA adapter is very limited.

What about the stream to TV that you have. Have you tried it with various apps as well as video? Will this adapter mirror exactly what is on the iPad screen which it seems like the VGA will not do?

Sorry - I have not used the VGA adapter - and yes the reviews are pretty mixed on the Apple site.

I have the component video plug (5 plug not composite 3 plug) and it plugs into my LCD tv.

It streams You tube, netflix and iPad video. It does not mirror the screen or any apps.

$30 is not a huge amount of money for me and if I had the tv and was after this solution (and had iPad 2 or greater) I would try it.

Traditionally, Navionics cards have always been used on chartplotters and it has only been the last several years where they started expanding into the PC market, partnering with Northport Systems, developer of Fugawi Marine ENC and X-Traverse, or Raymarine Raytech Navigation.

Now I am not a Navionics tech guy, but one reason that I suspect why charts on less expensive on the iPad is that there is actually less data. Maybe from a first glance, there seems to be no difference, but I think there should be a difference in terms of file size. With an iPad, I imagine it would take quite some time to download all the charts from X-Traverse if they were an exact duplicate of the Navionics cards. My suspicion is that $1,000 worth of data on the iPad MAY NOT be the same as $6,500 worth of data on the PC/chartplotter.

Another thing to consider as other users have mentioned would be getting a Windows laptop. Larger screen size = king. There are some interesting things you can do with a larger screen size such as multiple chart displays or having engine data available (example: Fugawi and Raytech, and Fugawi seems prettier).
