Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Hi Paul

I downloaded GE Pro a few days ago, as soon as it was available.
I routinely disable
"Allow Google Earth to automatically install recommended updates."
and
"Help us improve Google Earth by allowing us to collect anonymous usage statistics."
I still have GE non pro on my computer
GE2KAP won't open either, but runs fine if I open GE Pro beforehand.

Also, the pic quality does not seem as good as previously

Yep, will test V...15

V...15 now opens GE pro as it should

Disregard my remark on pic quality. I had too much overzoom...

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

I have uploaded a new version to fix the problems with GE Pro. Get it here:
Index of /Downloads

then click on Test.GE2KAP.V16.0.1.16.exe to download then run to install.

Besides support for GE Pro this version has an enhancement to an existing feature. Up to now you can use GE2KAP to create charts along a route. This version enhances that by allowing you to specify two heights for the charts created, a normal level and a detail level. Try it out and let me know if it works for you, just enter a route (gpx, kml) file in the Polygon/Path field and press Create Chart.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

To give you an example of how this new two heights for charts would be useful I have attached a route of the north coast of Cuba. For the most part the coast is unpenetrable reef so you don't need too much detail, but every now and then there is a passage through the reef where it would be nice to have more detail. as shown in the first attachment between the green arrows. Notice that the waypoints are closer together between the arrows.

So I run GE2KAP and specify the Normal height as 5000 meters and the detail height as 2000. You indicate when to switch to the detail height by specifying a Detail WP distance that is a little lionger than the longest leg in the detail area. You can get this distance by looking at the route properties. In this case it 1.5nm.

GE2KAP produces the charts as shown in the outlines on OpenCPN. Notice the larger charts (blue arrows) before and after the detail area. For the detail area it produced charts with more detail (green arrows).

You can see in the last attachment that you can see the path through the reef in detail charts.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Paul,

Did GE Pro make any changes to the cache file thus invalidating any saved caches?

What are the advantages to Pro for us sailors?

David, frankly I have no idea what the advantages are. Probably should google it to see. It looks like the images are no better. Maybe someone else can let us know.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

GE2KAP.V17.0.0.0 is now available. It allows you to create charts from GE along a route at two heights, a normal height and a detailed one.

You get it from my site
Sample in the Downloads .
or click on the "Check for Updates" button on the third panel of an older version.

Check the Help Polygon Path Support "Creating charts from a route" for details about creating charts at two heights.

Paul,
should we uninstall the previous versions before or after the new install?

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

You don't have to uninstall the old version. Just keep it around until you are confident the new version works for you.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

After our Garmin showing us about 200 yards inland in San Cristobal, Galapagos, I decided to get OpenCPN and GE2KAP going. OpenCPN is working well and so is GE2KAP with only a couple problems. When I create a chart from GE directly everything seems to work ok. But, if I create it using GE plugin while in OpenCPN I get an error every time while processing the chart. The tail of the GE2KAP log is shown below. Can someone give me a clue what to look at to solve. Running windoze 8.1 in Parallels 10 in a Mac.

Content of line:

We are currently in Papeete, Tahiti and using mostly the CM93 charts along with what we've found on Soggy Paws and Valhalla's sites.

Thanks a bunch and great software.
