English bay.

I am planning to head up to Port Moody to get my boat hauled, sailing from Blaine Washington. It is 52 nautical miles, too far to go in one day in the daylight. And we have to clear customs and clear both first and second Narrows in the Burrard Inlet which means paying attention to the tides. So I was thinking of selling up to English Bay and anchoring there are no Marked anchorage's on the charts there but I wonder if anyone has any experience anchoring in English Bay it looks about the right depth and fairly well protected except from Northwest.

Re: English bay.

You certainly do live in a picturesque part of the world. And I'm curious about this anchoring question as well. Some of it based on the not insubstantial population density in & around Vancouver. Something that quite often leads to more regulations on anchoring in the coastal waters near cities.

I found this thread, which includes a few links on living aboard in Vancouver. Including the bit about their being some Vancouver liveaboard forums. Though it's an old post. http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...rea-37809.html
And there's a bit more to be found on Vancouver via online searches. Including videos of English Bay showing some commercial vessels in the harbor there. And some boater's resources for the region in general.

Re: English bay.

Okay, its been a long time but you should be able to anchor on the south side over by the yacht club. Check it out on Google earth. Just stay away from the behemoths. I have actually seen a boat drag anchor and end up on the beach on the East side of the bay so make sure you are well set. This time of year you won't have much competition for space. Watch the mud flats...(vbg)

Like I said, its been a lot of years and things may have changed.

I used to have a berth just inside False Creek west of the bridge on the south side. I don't know if they have transient berths or not.

Re: English bay.

There is anchorage in False Creek --may need a permit but easy to obtain. Anchoring | City of Vancouver

Another option would to get temporary moorage at one of the several clubs, False Creek Yacht Club, Vancouver Rowing Club, or others. Call ahead for availability.

Enjoy the trip.

Re: English bay.

Thanks deepfrz. According to Navionics there are no transient berths in False creek, but i will try phoning them. I am comfortable anchoring near the yacht club. Will have crew and we can keep a watch if it feels necessary.

Re: English bay.

Are you unable to get a permit for anchoring in False Creek?

I think they issue them online now:

Re: English bay.

There is 2 weeks free anchoring in false bay - no big vessels to worry about. When you approach try find communication with I believe Civic Marina or Burrard Marina to get free permit

Hey, how did it go? Did you happen to go ashore in Vancouver? I've often thought of anchoring there but I worry about someone swiping the dinghy. LOTS of property crime/petty theft in that city.

Would be pretty cool to sleep for free in such an expensive city, though, haha

Re: English bay.

We had a good trip, spent two days, five days apart in False Creek, dingied to Granville is, both nights, tied up, were ashore about 2 hours the first time and a little less than that the second. No one bothered our dink or the battery or electric motor hanging from the transom.
