Charts for Upper Mississippi

Hi,

I downloaded and unpacked the charts from the US Corps of Engineers for the Upper Mississippi - but can't figure out how to read them.

I'm working with OpenCPN, but can't quite get it to work.

Anyone suggest a chart reader to read the S57 US Corps of Engineers charts for the Upper Mississippi. Thank you. /Stu

Re: Charts for Upper Mississippi

OpenCPN uses these charts as is. Unzip the file you downloaded into a folder. Go to the tools/charts setup and tell OpenCPN the name of the folder. That's all you have to do.

It will be easier if you get the chart downloader plugin for OpenCPN.

Opencpn has a feature called "object query". You can right click on the object and select "object query". It will show you what the object is.

Re: Charts for Upper Mississippi

I'am also on the upper Mississippi at 283 mm. I use C-Map Max chart for the Great Lakes, inland rivers and gulf coast on Standard Horizon plotters. I use a Navionics chip for the same area on my 17' cc and much prefer the C-Map. I also use my iPad with Garmin BlueChart Mobil it is comparable to the C-Map in detail, I've used the C-Map and iPad on a trip from here to the Detroit River found them both excellent. Here is a screen shot of each. Click image for larger version
