Well Done Rocna

Quick history: bought a Rocna25kg out of West Marine around Mar 2011.
Had to make a special trip from Mexico into Arizona to pick up from there store in Pheonix. Understandably will not send into Mexico. I was near San Carlos in the Sea of Cortez.

Anchor held exceptionally well, got hold fast and far better than what I had .
I have absolutely no hesitation recomending Rocna.
I experienced quite a big night loosing anchor , coming unstuck in 40+ kts and drifting across the harbour , and after research , decided on the Rocna for better sleeping at night insurance.

I then did the Puddle Jump , Ariving back home in Aus Nov 2011.
Since reading articles about the chinese Rocna,s , I sent in a picture of mine to Rocna, asking if it was a chinese made at that time of concern and what can be done. I actually still dont know if it was one the anchors manufactured from the lesser quality type steal. I certainly had no problems with mine as it was.

To there absolute credit, again, they offered to replace and send a new one to my closest dealer.
Absolutely FREE of charge.
This all happened in a very acceptable time frame of about 10days.

The service from Oceon Solutions (Aus distributor) and with the asistance of Don from Half Moon Bay Chandlery, I now have a brand new Rocna holding me fast.

I have never written a recomendation like this before , but after all they had done with the help of the above , I felt a WELL DONE was deserved.

You simply just dont get this service these days.

THANKYOU

Eventually...

Seriously, I'm glad you are happy with your Rocna. May it hold your boat without incidence for many years to come.

I know someone just returning to San Carlos. She could use an anchor lesson.

Re: WELL DONE ROCNA

Methinks Rocna is going to have to do a LOT of right things before confidence is restored in the brand, even though the questionable characters who were running it are gone (for the most part).

Degrading the steel to a new and lower 'standard' does not help it's veracity.

It's the old story, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

Re: WELL DONE ROCNA

Back in the old, old, days, the going anchor was a Rock. Na?

Anything we can get our sweaty little mitts on is bound to be better. And the story of how Rocna is bending over backwards to ensure their customer gets the real deal, is a breath of fresh air. That said, I suspect cash-strapped yours truly will be welding up some DIY anchors with inspiration from several successful types. For personal studies of anchorology, of course, no profit involved. The heavier the hook and the more energy I can bleed off the boat via the rode & kellet, the better.

Good onya Rocna. Kiwis, aren't they?

I thought this going to be an anchor thread, but it is so boring!

Re: WELL DONE ROCNA

The Rocna design is quite good. The shift to China mfg sucks.Along with all the double dealing.

Cast flukes with cast in lettering is a giveaway that it is China made.

The question becomes was it before the switch to almost good enough steel?

Back to your anchor....

If you had a Canada or NZ built Rocna and traded it away you lost out. Dig out a few pictures of the old anchor and post them and perhaps we can guess if it was a Russian Roulette anchor.

I returned my very weak steel Rocna to WM and bought a Manson. I have no doubts of the anchors strength now.

If I found a NZ or CA (not CN) built Rocna in33 Kg I would buy it. But not a CN (China) Rocna.... In part due to a distrust of the metal and in part in due to the actions of the company.

Regards

The New Canada anchors still have the cast lettering.

Re: WELL DONE ROCNA

No Rocna anchors are made in Canada. All production moved to China. At least that was so last time I spoke with Mark Pollack.

What makes you think that they make any Rocna in Canada?

Regards

Re: WELL DONE ROCNA

And here is a writeup from YBM:

Rocna Anchors acquired by Canada Metal Pacific | News from Yachting & Boating World | ybw

Quote:

The licence to manufacture Rocna anchors has been re-assigned to Canada Metal Pacific, it was announced today.

UPDATE: A spokesman for Canada Metal Pacific told YBW that Rocna anchors will continue to be manufactured in China. They told us that last week a quality control specialist from New Zealand was sent to China to ensure the manufacturer is using the correct steel to produce Rocna anchors.
The spokesman also wrote in the YBW forums that Canada Metal Pacific and Rocna would be concentrating on sorting out the issue of using reduced spec steel in anchors, as well as focusing on a number of other problems that have damaged the reputation of Rocna anchors. You can read more about this the YBW forums.

The news comes after it was recently revealed that Rocna produced anchors made with a lesser grade of steel than called for on their website.

As a result, West Marine issued a product specification notice last month, which allowed customers with a Chinese-made Rocna anchor to request a full refund.

Rocna anchors will now be manufactured by Canada Metal Pacific.
