Second the course of action of having someone check on it from time to time.

Customers ask me to check their boats over the winter as they have some distance to travel.

I advise them to not abandon the boat entirely over the winter....but to pick a nice day to visit.....poke around....kick back.

Financial costs of yacht storage...

Let's assume a $100k yacht stored for 5 years at $200pm.
Loss of earning power @12% = $60k.
Depreciation 6% = $30k
Cost of going into and coming out of storage(est) = $4,000
Maintenance 3% = 15k (yes, it still needs to be looked after)
Storage costs 5 * 12 * $200 = $12000
Insurance(est) = 5 * $1000 = $5,000
Total Cost = $126,000

In other words unless you are really unlucky you could sell and then buy a similar boat in near perfect condition for what you are loosing if you store your boat.

Hi James, is your boat currently anchored in a Marina in La Paz? I am currently looking for a "boatsitting" situation. I have several friends docked in La Paz and would love to watch over a boat in exchange for a place to live. I'm a 48 year old single male that doesn't smoke or have wild party's and have the utmost respect for other peoples property. Just looking for a more simple way to live!
Contact me if this is something of interest too you or any other owners here in La Paz Mexico!

Better sell it, as some one suggested. Invest the proceeds. And buy something else 5 years later.
