Sea anchor

Hi,Iam looking to purchase a sea anchor for our multihull 45 foot by 28 by4 draught, for off shore use.for safety reasons
The Coppins from NZ looks interesting
And the Fiorentino seems well priced for what you get,
Does anyone have experience with particular brands,
Positives and negatives would be appreciated
Thanks in advance

Re: Sea anchor

Thank you to ad28 and S Dave for info,
I was hoping that some members have tried different brands of sea anchors
For a comparison or what they are happy with.
Thanks again

Re: Sea anchor

Frankly, sir,

I'd take the advice of the DDDB over that of an Internet forum anytime, however ironic my reply may be...

Re: Sea anchor

Yes Ad28 the DDDB great advice and extremely informative,
But I may have missed the part where the. Book recommended one brand of sea anchor over another,.
Iam sold on using a sea anchor but just trying to compare brands before purchasing one.
Thank you for the reply ad28

Re: Sea anchor

We purchased a Para-Tech and had the occasion to deploy it during a gale in the Gulf of Alaska. At the time, I think it was the best method of storm management as we had our three young children on board, however, I think if we were to face weather of that intensity now, I might use other techniques.

Retrieval of the sea anchor was a major challenge and very dangerous. When we finally got to Sitka, Alaska, I hoisted the sea anchor on a halyard to hose it down and let it dry. A couple of men from the local Coast Guard station stopped to ask us about our experience. They commented that they see very few sea anchors retrieved - they said that most people just cut them loose.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Sea anchor

Hi Nhschneider,

very interesting experience which I hope noone needs to duplicate.

Still I have few questions. I hope you are willing to share some experience.

Did you use a tripline? If yes, did you run it back to the boat or only to a float?

At what stage did you turn her nose to the waves? Guess that's a scary situation as you are beam to the waves for a moment and than drifting back until the bridle is engaged.

Thanks so much!
